Under the direction of legendary head coach Judi Garman, the Titans were well-established on the national scene and poised to make a return to the Women's College World Series (WCWS) where they were runners-up in 1983. Having already participated in the AIAW Nationals or WCWS five times, the 1986 team had all the ingredients in place for a stellar season. The roster boasted formidable balance on the mound and behind the plate. Susan LeFebvre and Connie Clark led a very stingy pitching staff to an ERA of 0.28, while Chenita Rogers (OF) would hit .330, Robin Goodin (IF) hit .271, and Terri Oberg (IF) would hit .275 and drive in 39 runs.
Fullerton entered the 1986 postseason at 50-9-1. To get to the WCWS in Omaha, Nebraska, the Titans shut-out Cal Poly Pomona in two straight games in an NCAA Regional. The Titans then defeated Long Beach State, Cal, Texas A&M, and Indiana to reach the final game in Omaha.
The Championship Game was held on May 25, 1986 in front of 1,421 fans when Fullerton faced Texas A&M, who rose from the loser's bracket. Ace, Connie Clark, was in the circle for the Titans and gave up only one hit in just two hours and four minutes. Terri Oberg, Rina Foster (OF), and Robin Goodin each crossed the plate to help the Titans defeat the Aggies 3-0 to become NCAA National Champions.
The Titans ran the table in the postseason to go 7-0, outscoring their opponents 16-1, and finishing the season at 57-9-1. Connie Clark, Rina Foster, Robin Goodin, and Chenita Rogers were named to the All-World Series team. JoAnn Ferrieri, Robin Goodin, Chenita Rogers, Terri Oberg, and Susan LeFebvre were named First Team All-Region. Susan LeFebvre and Chenita Rogers were named All-Americans.Â
The following members of the 1986 National Championship team were previously inducted to the Titans Athletics Hall of Fame in recognition of their individual excellence: Head Coach Judi Garman (Class of 2007), Assistant Coach Kathy Van Wyk (Class of 2017), Susan LeFebvre (Class of 2005), Connie Clark (Class of 2009).
