Leadership Initiative

Mission Statement
To cultivate, foster and facilitate an environment for the Titan Athletic Community that works jointly with the university community to reflect its mission and goals.

Goals & Objectives
The Titans Athletics Leadership Initiative committee will accomplish the mission by:
  • Encouraging individuals to explore their intersecting identities by reflecting on the experiences of themselves and others
  • Developing collectively conscious perspectives with anti-hate, equity and social justice across multiple marginalities, and enhance empathy and understanding of diverse experiences and social location
  • Collaborating with university and community partners to transform students’ lives, enhance mobility, catalyze change, and generate resources in the spirit of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
Activities Planned
  • Onboarding Leadership Initiative Program
    - The athletic Leadership Initiative onboarding program is designed to integrate new staff and student-athletes into our organization’s culture of leadership. This comprehensive program includes training sessions, workshops and activities embracing leadership initiatives.

  • “What’s Your Story”
    - Throughout the school year, we’ll match various teams, providing them with an opportunity to share their narratives and identities. This initiative will offer student-athletes at CSUF the chance to familiarize themselves with their peers, fostering acceptance, comprehension and inclusivity.

  • Power Lunch: “Conversations with Titans”
    - Throughout the fall and spring semesters, off-season coaches will designate one representative from each coaching staff to participate in a lunch pairing initiative with a coach from another team including our Assistant Athletic Director of Leadership Initiative, Jay Darden. Aimed at fostering deeper connections, these discussions will revolve around candid reflections on the significance of Leadership Initiative, with a focus on brainstorming strategies to cultivate a more positive and inclusive workplace environment within the Titan Athletics Department. The ideas generated will be reviewed and potentially incorporated into actionable initiatives.

  • Tuesday Talks: Diverse Perspectives Monthly Forum
    - Our Diverse Perspectives Monthly Forum provides a platform for open and constructive discussion on a wide range of topics related to Leadership Initiative. Each month we explore various aspects of identity, culture, social justice and allyship. Through engaging conversations and shared experiences, we strive to cultivate an athletics department that values and celebrates leadership in all forms.

  • Allyship & Advocacy Training
    - Designed to empower our staff members to actively support marginalized communities and promote DEI. This training will emphasize practical strategies for becoming effective allies, including listening with empathy, amplifying marginalized voices and acting against discrimination. Through education, dialogue and role-playing scenarios, our staff will develop the skills and confidence to advocate for underrepresented groups.
