I, Augie Garrido led the Titans to a national championship, defeating Arkansas in the championship. After losing the opener to Mississippi State, the Titans fight their way back through the losers' bracket. Right-hander Dave Weatherman, who got knocked out early in an eventual 8-5 win over Pepperdine, came back to pitch the championship game and beat Arkansas, 2-1, with a complete game four-hitter. Starter Tony Hudson was converted to a reliever and won the Most Valuable Player Award. The 1979 team had 10 MLB draft picks that year, led by Tim Wallach who was selected 10th overall.Â
