STANFORD, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton split Saturday's doubleheader at Stanford, falling 4-3 in game one before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory in game two. With the split, the Titans move to 3-4 on the season.
Game One (Stanford 4, Titans 3)
Stanford jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in part because of a fielding error by the Titans that allowed the leadoff batter to reach third base. The Cardinal added two more runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-0 lead.Â
After falling behind 3-0, the Titans came storming back in the eighth inning with three runs to tie the game at 3-3. Fullerton loaded the bases with no outs to set up Max Ortega for a two-run single through the left side of the infield to score Andrew Kirchner and Nick Miller.Â
With runners on second and third and one out, Britton Beeson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Paul Contreras and tie the game at 3-3.Â
Stanford went on to walk the game off in the bottom of the ninth inning to take game one of the doubleheader 4-3. A one-out double put a runner in scoring position before a double down the left field line ended the game.Â
Dylan Smith gave the Titans another strong start, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched. Smith has a 1.59 ERA through two starts this season, pitching 11.1 innings.Â
Game Two (Titans 4, Stanford 3)
The second game of the day started in similar fashion, with Stanford taking an early 2-0 lead in the second inning.Â
This time the Titans quickly responded with one run in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. With two outs and runners on first and second, Kirchner singled to right center field to bring home Niko Lombardi from second base.Â
Fullerton tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Contreras to score Cameron Kim from second base. Kim hit a double down the right field line to get in scoring position with one out.Â
Stanford retook the lead in the fifth inning on a ball hit in the infield that resulted in a bad throw at the plate to go up 3-2.Â
Jayden Harper got the start for Fullerton and kept the team in the game. Harper allowed three runs on four hits in five innings pitched while walking three and striking out a career-high eight batters. Through two starts this season Harper has 15 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched.Â
The Titans countered in the seventh inning with two runs to take their first lead of the day. Hunter Meyer started the inning with a single before stealing second base on a strikeout. Kirchner and Miller then reached on a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases with one out.Â
Fullerton scored two runs to take the lead on a play that was described by fans in the stands as "classic Titans Baseball". Logan Hart laid down a perfect bunt to score the tying run in Meyer on a sacrifice. With the bunt being a slow dribbler up the first base line and a race to the first base bag, Kirchner rounded third and made an unbelievable slide at home to avoid the tag and give Fullerton a 4-3 lead.Â
The Titans pitching staff stifled the Stanford lineup over the final three innings to secure the win. Dylan Goff recorded two outs in the seventh before passing the ball to Brock Mayer. Goff would earn the win after pitching 1.2 no-hit innings, walking just one batter and striking out two.Â
Mayer pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his first save of the season and first Div. I save. Mayer stranded a Cardinal at second after inheriting the runner in the seventh and wouldn't allow another base runner for the remainder of the game.Â
Fullerton leads the series 2-1 going into the fourth and final game Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
