Tanner Bibee Named Guardians Opening Day Starter

FULLERTON, Calif. – In just his third year in Major League Baseball, Tanner Bibee has been named the Opening Day starter for the Cleveland Guardians, the organization announced Wednesday.

"[The message] was like, 'Hey, you said you wanted this, and now you earned it,'" Manager Stephen Vogt said. "For Tanner, he's earned every bit of this. We're just really excited for him and his family. It's a big deal, and I'm really excited for Tanner."

In 31 starts in 2024, Bibee went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP and 187 strikeouts over 173 2/3 innings. Bibee started four postseason games a year ago, two against the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS and two against the New York Yankees in the ALCS.

In game five against the Yankees in the ALCS, Bibee allowed just two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work while striking out five batters.

Bibee will join great company in franchise history when he toes the rubber in Kansas City. Since 2014, only two Guardians pitchers have started on Opening Day: two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber (2015-19) and Bieber ('20-24).
