Dossman 2x champ

FEATURE: T&F’s Ian Dossman finds his footing on big stage

| By:

The sprinter, who holds multiple Fullerton records, has won three individual conference championships this year. He will help lead the Titans at the NCAA West First Round.

At the MPSF Indoor Track and Field Championships in March in Reno, Ian Dossman was looking for a breakthrough. The Cal State Fullerton sprinter had won gold in 4x100-meter relays and silver and bronze in 100m and 200m races at past conference championships but had never won an individual conference title.

Dossman, a junior from Elk Grove, achieved his goal, winning the 200m in 20.54, which broke his own school record. He advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships, reaching the 200m final. And while he was disqualified for a lane violation, Dossman said the overall experience was highly positive.

"I gained a lot of confidence winning the [Mountain Pacific Sports Federation] championship and advancing to the NCAAs. And it was the first time I had made an NCAA final. Being there among the best sprinters in the nation changed my mind set and how I see big moments. I thought to myself, 'I was built for this."

The 21-year-old Dossman kept rolling in the outdoor season. He pulled off a remarkable double at the Big West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May in Long Beach, winning the 100m and 200m dashes.

He ran a wind-aided 10.02 in the 100m and broke his school record with a 20.20 clocking in the 200m. Dossman was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet.

In addition to his indoor and outdoor 200m school records, Dossman also holds Fullerton's wind-legal record in the outdoor 100m (10.23) and was a member of the outdoor 4x100 relay squad that ran a school-record time of 39.08.

"It felt unreal to win both events at the Big West finals. I've just been working hard for those big moments in the indoor and outdoor seasons. I was ecstatic but mostly gratified that I performed to the best of my ability," he said. "I received a lot of back slaps and hugs from my teammates. They weren't surprised, just proud that I could accomplish what I did."

Dossman, who is a business major, will try to make his mark on the national level this week at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West First Round. Besides the 100m and 200m, he is expected to anchor the Titans' 4x100m relay team.

Sixteen Titans qualified for the four-day event in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which begins Wednesday and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

The top 12 athletes from each individual event and the top 12 teams from each relay event will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 10-13. Fullerton senior Keith Orona has already qualified for the men's decathlon at the NCAA Championships.

"Our team as a whole is confident with its fitness and training, and no one is intimidated competing in the NCAA regional," said Marquess Barosso, the Titans' fifth-year head coach. "Our student-athletes understand what it takes to advance. They are very excited and looking forward to competing and punching a ticket to the NCAA nationals."

Coach Barosso
"Our team as a whole is confident with its fitness and training, and no one is intimidates competing in the NCAA regional," says Fullerton heach coach Marques Barosso.

Barosso, who oversees the sprinters, hurdlers and relays, said Dossman has come a long way from his freshman days. "Most athletes typically break out in their junior year, and that's what Ian is doing. Winning the MPSF indoors 200 meters did a lot for his confidence. He's taken that to the outdoor events and has been unstoppable."

"Ian has trusted the program and the process. He's worked out at a high level in practice. If you do the same thing in meets, you will be successful. That's what he is doing."

Dossman competed in Fayetteville as a freshman and said he likes John McDonnell Field, the University of Arkansas track stadium.

He also gave a shutout to Barosso. "Coach B has spent a lot of time helping me get to this point. I have appreciated everything he has done for me."
