SAN DIEGO – Cal State Fullerton rode an early lead to an 11-6 win over San Diego Tuesday night at Fowler Park. With the win the Titans improve to 11-13 on the year.Â
The Titans took an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Andrew Kirchner to score Cameron Kim from second base.Â
Fullerton extended its lead to 4-0 with three runs in the third inning. Paul Contreras started the inning with a solo home run to left center field, his fifth of the season.Â
The Titans added two more runs on an RBI single by Ty Thomas and a productive infield out by Esteban Olazaba.Â
Cam Burdick led-off the fourth inning with a solo shot to right center field to give Fullerton a 5-0 lead. Burdick now has two home runs this season.Â
Fullerton took a 7-0 lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Niko Lombardi that brought home Thomas and a fielding error by San Diego that allowed Olazaba to score.Â
The bottom of the fifth inning got away from the Titans as two fielding errors led to three unearned runs for San Diego.Â
San Diego slowly chipped away at the lead from there, hitting one solo home run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh inning to cut the Titans lead to 7-6.Â
The Titans got the momentum back in the top of the eighth inning, scoring three runs to extend their lead to 10-6.Â
Kim started the inning with a double down the left field line to set up Nick Miller with an RBI single down the right field line. Kim now has 13 doubles on the year which is tied for second most in the country.Â
With Miller at first base, Contreras blasted a two-run home run to left field for his second home run of the game and sixth of the season. Contreras went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.Â
The Titans added an insurance run in the ninth inning to take an 11-6 lead. Thomas led-off the inning with a double before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt.Â
With two outs, Burdick singled to left field to drive in Thomas. Burdick, the Carlsbad native, went 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Meanwhile, Thomas also went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
Nick Santivanez (1-0) earned his first win of the season after pitching two no-hit innings while striking out three batters and walking just one. Fullerton held San Diego hitless until the fifth inning.Â
Fullerton is back to Big West play this weekend with a three-game series at Hawaii beginning Friday night.
