FULLERTON, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton secured a victory on opening day with a 3-1 win over CBU Friday night at Goodwin Field. With the win, Jason Dietrich secures his 100th victory as head coach at Fullerton.
Mikiah Negrete battled on the mound in his first career start on opening day. The senior was in a dogfight early, throwing 20 pitches in the first inning all while retiring the side in order. Negrete quickly settled in and gave the Titans what they needed in game one, five shutout innings while allowing just three hits, striking out four batters and not issuing a single walk.Ā
The Titans added some run support in the fourth inning with a two-out rally and some help from the CBU defense. Cade O'Hara singled to left field to put a runner on base with two outs before a fly ball by Hunter Meyer caused miscommunication in the outfield before ultimately falling to the ground and allowing O'Hara to score.Ā
Eli Lopez quickly took advantage of the mistake with an RBI single to left field, bringing home Meyer from second base to give Fullerton a 2-0 lead.Ā
CBU got on the board in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Titans lead to 2-1. Brock Mayer limited the damage to just one run after working his way in and out of a bases-loaded jam.Ā
Fullerton got the run back in the bottom of the seventh inning, once again on a Lopez RBI single, this time driving in Ty Thomas from second base to extend the lead to 3-1. Lopez went 2-for-4 on the night with two RBI and a walk.Ā
After recording 10 saves a year ago, Andrew Wright wasted no time earning his first save of the 2026 season. The junior pitched the final 1.2 innings and while he may have not had his best stuff, he found a way to close out the game. Wright issued three walks and had to work himself out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to secure the victory.Ā
The Titans head to Riverside Saturday for the next two games of the series at CBU. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with game two at 5:00 p.m. The series finale returns to Goodwin Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
