Fullerton Falls Short in Both Games of Doubleheader at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton fell short in both games at CBU Saturday, falling in game one by a score of 5-4 in 17 innings and 7-6 in game two of the doubleheader. The Titans are now 1-2 on the year.

Game One
It took 17 innings to decide game one of the doubleheader before CBU walked off on a hit by pitch, winning 5-4 in the bottom of the 17th.

The two sides went into extra innings tied at 1-1. Andrew Kirchner and the Titans broke the tie in the top of the 11th inning with a two-run home run. However, CBU battled back to score two runs to tie the game at 3-3 to keep the game going.

After five scoreless innings, the Titans once again broke the tie. This time it was Niko Lombardi scoring on a wild pitch in the 17th inning.

CBU responded with two walks to start the bottom of the inning followed by a single to load the bases with no outs. Fullerton would then walk in the tying run before a hit by pitch ended the game.

After falling behind in the fourth inning, the Titans got on the board in the sixth on an RBI single by Cameron Kim to bring home Paul Contreras and tie the game at 1-1. Kim finished the game 3-for-6 with an RBI and a walk.

The game was a pitchers duel from start to finish and a battle of attrition on the mound. Fullerton used a total of nine pitchers while CBU used seven.

Dylan Smith got the start for the Titans and allowed just one unearned run on five hits in five innings of work. Smith struck out one batter while not issuing a single walk.

First-year transfer Joseph Jasso saw his first action on the mound as a Titan and shut down the Lancers in 2.2 innings pitched. Jasso came on in the eighth inning and pitched through the end of the 10th, not allowing a hit while walking just one batter and striking out three.

Game Two
Both teams had a slow start to game two of the day after a 17 inning battle in game one. CBU ultimately struck first with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Titans immediately responded with three runs in the top half of the fifth. Esteban Olazaba and Britton Beeson started the inning with back-to-back singles before a fielding error on a sac bunt loaded the bases.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Niko Lombardi ripped a bases clearing double down the left field line to give Fullerton a 3-1 lead.

CBU had a quick response of its own, hitting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3. The Lancers extended their lead in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to take a 7-3 lead.

With the second game scheduled for seven innings, the Titans made a valiant effort at a comeback in the top of the seventh.

Eli Lopez pinch hit to start the inning and drew a walk to give the Titans a leadoff base runner. Nick Miller followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out Ty Thomas singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Lopez from second and cut the deficit to 7-4.

Max Ortega then came through with a pinch-hit single to bring home Miller while bringing the Titans within two runs, 7-5. Kim followed with an RBI fielder's choice to drive in Thomas and make it a one run game. However, the Titans were unable to complete the comeback.

The two teams return to Goodwin Field Sunday afternoon for the fourth and final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
