FULLERTON, Calif. — Christian Wood won the men's long jump to highlight Cal State Fullerton track and field's day one showing at The Big West Championships Friday at home. The men currently sit in third place while the women are in eighth.
Wood dominated his event, winning the long jump with a mark of 7.57m on his third attempt, 0.12m better than second-place finisher Elijah Harris of Long Beach State. Camren Willis took third in the event with a personal-best mark of 7.43m.
Talman Young finished second in the first track event of the day, the men's 3k steeplechase, with a time of 8:59.94. Tony Chavez placed sixth in the event with a personal-best time of 9:06.16. In the only other men's track final of the day, the men's 10k, Alexis Garcia finished third with a time of 30:34.82.
In the men's pole vault, Daniel Palacio led the way for the Titans with a third-place finish, clearing a mark of 5.07m on his first attempt. Sam Heinrichs also cleared a mark of 5.07m, but on his second attempt, to place fourth. Ernesto Collazo took seventh with a 4.92m clearance while Andrew Aguilar took 11th with a 4.77m clearance.
Kyliegh Wilkerson took bronze in the women's discus, throwing for a personal-best mark of 49.58m. Kaylah McNairy placed 17th in the event with a 40.63m. Wilkerson placed 10th in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best 50.29m, while Natalia Delgado took 17th with a personal-best 48.95m.
In the final event of the day, the women's 10k, McKaylie Caesar finished fourth with a time of 34:22.58. Kimberly Pena placed 14th, running a 37:29.64, while Quinn Roldan placed 16th.
Several Titans qualified for track finals in their respective events tomorrow, including Carter Birade, who won the men's 110m hurdles prelims with a personal-best time of 13.96m. Abel Jordan and Matthew Uballe also qualified. In the men's 400m prelims, Isaiah Emerson qualified with a second-place finish, running a personal-best 47.40. Justin Lowe and Chris Goode also qualified.
Dominic Gates took second in the men's 100m prelims with a wind-legal personal-best time of 10.45, with John Clifford and Birade also qualifying with personal-bests. Clifford ran a 10.52 while Birade ran a 10.53. On the women's side, Trinity Barnett qualified in the 100m with a personal-best time of 11.62, finishing third.
Alero Soaris and Arionn Livingston qualified for the finals in the women's 400m prelims, while Mia Bergman and Olivia Ruiz qualified in the women's 1500m prelims. Jeremiah Castellano qualified in the men's 1500m prelims as well as the men's 800m prelims.
In the men's 400m hurdles, Reyte Rash, Matt Cohen and Andrew Aguilar each qualified for tomorrow's finals. Clifford and Lowe qualified in the men's 200m prelims and Barnett earned a qualifying time for tomorrow's women's 200m finals.
As a team, the men sit in third place with 55.50 points, behind Cal Poly (74) and Long Beach State (65.5). The women sit in eighth place with 11 points.
The Titans resume the action tomorrow, Saturday, May 13th, for the final day of Big West Championship competition.
