STOCKTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton's women's tennis team is off to its best start on record after a 5-2 victory over Pacific at Brookside Country Club on Friday afternoon.
The Titans (5-1) are also on a three-match winning streak as CSF is off to its best start on record since 1981. Pacific is now 3-4 on the year.
For the fifth time this season, Fullerton started the match by clinching the doubles point as the freshman team of Karla Portalatin and Masako Makiba defeated Pacific's Maayan Sela and Katie Dyson, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Sarah Nuno and sophomore Danielle Pham gave the Titans the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win over Yuki Asami and Anneroos Nederstigt at No. 3 doubles to seal the point.
In singles action, Nuno put the Titans ahead 2-1 with a three-set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, come-from-behind win over Sela at No. 3 in the lineup.
Camille De Leon improved to 4-2 on the year with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Cristina Saenz de BR to push Fullerton's advantage to 3-1. Pham's 6-3, 7-5 defeat of Asami at the bottom of the order sealed the Titans' win.
In addition, Makiba edged Sabrina Rodriguez, 7-6 (4), 6-4, at the No. 5 spot in the order.
The Titans return to action on Saturday at UC Davis with an 11 a.m. start in Fullerton's Big West Conference opener.
