Titan Memories: Stacey Fox Webster – A Titan Through and Through

Stacey Fox was a four-year starter at forward for the Cal State Fullerton Women's Soccer program, before returning to the Titans as a 10-year assistant coach to Demian Brown.

The former All-Ventura County selection from Simi Valley's Royal High School was already familiar with Cal State Fullerton when Coach Brown, then an assistant to Ali Khosroshahin, began recruiting her.

"I was contacted by a few other Division I schools, including Cal State Northridge, UC Santa Barbara, and Fresno State. Demian had also recruited my sister, Katie, two years before, so I had the opportunity to visit Fullerton a couple of times beforehand. I fell in love with the campus and the facilities."

"I also really valued the recruiting process and the relationship I was able to develop with Demian. The player-coach relationship was very important to me when choosing where I wanted to go to school, and that played a big role in my decision to attend Fullerton."

After earning All-Big West Conference honorable mention honors as a freshman, Stacey tore her ACL 17 games into her sophomore season.

"I had never experienced a serious injury that would keep me out for nine to 12 months. I'm a very competitive person and player, and that competitiveness really transferred to my rehab. I developed the mentality that my new competition was what I was doing in the training room—pushing myself every day and committing myself to getting better."

Stacey credits athletic trainer Nathan Longcrier for pushing her every day and being incredibly supportive during her recovery.

"Mentally, not playing was really difficult. At the same time, it gave me a completely different perspective on the game. Watching from the sidelines and up in the stands helped my soccer IQ grow. I started seeing things differently—like realizing how much space there was on the opposite side of the field—things that can be difficult to recognize when you're actually in the game."

"I really grew during that year, and I believe the experience ultimately made me a much better player, and later as a coach."

Following her injury, Fox roared back, earning multiple honors during her junior and senior years, and was part of the Titans' Big West regular-season championship in 2012.

After graduating in the fall of 2012, her transition to coaching came about almost by accident: "I remember sending a message to our assistant coach, Lauryn Welch (now Pehanich), asking if she knew of any openings in the Athletics department. At the time, I was working a 9-to-5 office job and really missed being around students and being on a college campus.

"She said, 'Well, what about coaching?' Lauryn was about to take the head coaching position at La Verne and would be leaving that spring, creating an opening. I had never really thought about coaching, but I had been a captain for four years, so I figured I had kind of been coaching on the field already. Why not try it? I remember thinking it sounded like a great gig—come to practice, hang out, and go home. How hard could it be?" She said with a laugh.

After meetings with Coaches Brown and Diego Bocanegra, the hiring process began. "I was so grateful for the opportunity," she added.

"My first couple of years were definitely a transition because I was now coaching girls I had been friends and teammates with. I think being a captain for most of my playing career, as well as being an older fifth-year player, helped me establish a different type of relationship with them."

Her memories as a coach are many: "It was really special to have the opportunity to coach in the NCAA Tournament because that was something I never got to experience as a player."

"I also specifically remember a game against UCSB when I helped make a significant adjustment that had an impact on the game. That was a very memorable moment for me as a coach."

"Additionally, Jim Donovan (retiring Titan A.D.) had an impact on me as a coach. He really pushed to raise the bar and increase the expectations for all of our athletic teams. Seeing that commitment to higher standards and expectations was something I really appreciated."

Unfortunately, many of the women Stacey played with have moved out of state, and their interactions are infrequent. "As for the women I coached, I've stayed connected with quite a few of them. Some have even babysat for me, including Olivia Peraza, Haley Gough, and Amber Mallas. For a while, I was also playing in a league with Tala Haddad and Ivy Diego. We still try to meet up at a few games each season."

She still stays in close contact with Titan coaches, Demian Brown and Kellan Wilson.

While a student, she first interacted with her future husband, Perry Webster '12, a former Titan men's basketball point guard, while playing an online game of "Words With Friends" with a teammate, and they later met in person in the training room.

The couple married in 2015 and live in Placentia with their four children: Vincent (10), Lucas (8), Olivia (5), and Emma (2). Perry Webster is the head men's basketball coach at Fullerton College and won his third 3C2A California state championship in March.

Opting to withdraw from coaching to stay at home with her young children, Stacey still keeps her hand in the soccer world: "I work for a technology platform that serves some of the largest and most elite youth soccer clubs in the country. Our platform helps connect different areas of youth soccer, including events, club operations, players, and colleges."

Coach Brown had this to say about Stacey: "As a player, she proved to have an immediate impact in our program, both on and off the field. However, I felt even luckier to have spent a decade with her as a colleague on my staff.

"Stacey is a true Titan, and her contributions as a coach and player will never be forgotten."
