SAN JOSE, Calif . - The Cal State Fullerton Titans Womens' soccer team drew 2-2 at San Jose State to start their road trip to Northern California on Thursday night at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Â
After a fast start for the Titans that took under a minute to score, the Spartans scored twice in five minutes late in the first half to take a shock lead over the Titans. The Titans responded with a dominant second half where they outshot their opponent 8-0 (18-to-7) for the game as
Camryn Cruz netted her first goal of the season to bring the game back level. Â
The Titans moved to 1-1-2 for the season overall. Â
The Titans went ahead 1-0 during their attacking sequence of the game. After a Spartan defender cleared a cross from
Riley O'Brien,
Cassie Villanueva was there to pick up the ball. She sent in a beautiful trivela cross to an unmarked
Sasha Amezcua who scored her second straight goal to give the Titans the lead.
The Titans continued to press for a second goal as they had a couple good shot attempts. Â San Jose State brought in a line change of substitutions 30 minutes into the match that gave the Spartans fresh legs. Â In the 38th minute, San Jose State scored after a freekick opportunity. Â Making her first career start in goal,
Riley Jolls made the initial save on the ball but the ball spilled back to Abigail Peterman who scored the rebound to tie the game at 1-1.
The Spartans took a lead over the Titans nearly five minutes later after another set piece opportunity. Â Sophia Daily set in a corner kick that the Titans defense failed to clear and the Spartan's Peterman rifled a shot past Jolls to give the hosts the lead.
In the second half, it was all Cal State Fullerton for most of the half as they outshot their opponents 8-0 and had five corner kicks.Â
Cayla Oliveira had a shot saved early to start the second half. Â
The Titans finally capitalized on a set piece in the 66th minute.Â
Skye Johnson sent a freekick into the box and
Cassie Villanueva headed it to the right side where the ball went off a Spartan's back to
Kaylin Raibon. Raibon cut the ball back to
Camryn Cruz who was able to shoot it past the keeper for her first goal of the season to make it a 2-2 game.
The Titans had a couple good opportunities to score the winner a few minutes later as Amezcua and Villanueva both had shot saved. Â
Camryn Cruz had another chance to score the winner after a perfect layoff pass inside the box but her shot was rushed over the crossbar. Â
In her first career start,
Riley Jolls made three saves all in the first half.Â
The Titans will close our their Northern California trip and play their final non-conference away fixture on Sunday as they head to No. 1 Stanford. Â Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Cagan Stadium on the ACC Network.
