FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team defeated LMU 2-1 at home on Sunday afternoon in their home opener after a late goal from
Cassie Villanueva in the 87th minute at Titan Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Titans took an early 1-0 lead in the second half after a penalty kick in the 54th minute was scored by
Sasha Amezcua.
The Titans were pressing for a second goal before LMU tied the game on the 76th minute after Cameron Bourne scored on her own rebound after an initial save from
Allison Craycroft.
The Titans pressed for a late winner and finally found the breakthrough with less than four minutes to go.Â
Sail Bozinovic passed the ball up to
Sasha Amezcua. Amezcua played a through ball up to Cassie Villenueva down the leftside. Villanueva hit a perfect shot from a side angle off the far upper corner  of the LMU goal and the ball bounced back into the LMU net to give the Titans back the lead. The senior transfer from UNLV has scored in back-to-back games after sitting out the season opener due to injury. Â
The Titans outshot the Lions 23-to-9 for the game including a strong 15-to-4 advantage in the second half. The Titans had 9 shots on goal to the Lions 5 shots on goal. The Titans had nine corner kicks to the Lions two corner kicks. Â
Allison Craycroft made four saves for the game and earned her first career win. Â
The Titans head to NorCal this week for their final two non-conference road games of the season. Â They take on San Jose State on Thursday with kick-off at 7:00 p.m. and then head to No. 1 Stanford on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. game.
