FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped game two of the series against Cal Poly by a final score 7-6 Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans fall to 22-27 on the year and 14-12 in Big West play.Â
Similar to game one of the series, the Titans struck in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. After leadoff hit by pitch on Nick Miller and a stolen base, Paul Contreras doubled down the left field line to give Fullerton an early lead.Â
Cal Poly scored one run in the third inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Mustangs went on to score two in the fourth and one in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.Â
After four scoreless innings the Titans got on the board again in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run by Andrew Kirchner to cut the deficit to 4-2. Kirchner now has seven home runs on the year.Â
Cal Poly, however, answered with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead.Â
Britton Beeson and Cam Burdick started the seventh inning with back-to-back walks before an error and a wild pitch scored Beeson to cut the deficit to 7-3.Â
Following a Miller walk to put runners on the corners, Contreras ripped the first pitch he saw 420 feet over the scoreboard to bring the Titans within one run, 7-6. Contreras went 2-for-3 with a run, two walks, and a tied for career-high four RBI while recording his 12th home run of the season.Â
Cal Poly intentionally walked Contreras in the bottom of the ninth inning, putting the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate, however, the Titans were unable to produce a hit.Â
Brock Mayer had a strong outing in relief to keep the Titans in the game, pitching 2.1 shutout innings while giving up just one hit and striking out two batters.Â
Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly will meet for the rubber match Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. Prior to Sunday's contest the baseball program will honor 12 seniors beginning at 12:25 p.m.
