SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Trailing by one run entering the ninth inning, Cal State Fullerton rallied to score three runs to take game two over UC Santa Barbara, 9-7, and even the series at one game apiece. The Titans improve to 20-21 on the year and 12-8 in Big West play.Â
Fullerton was down 7-6 heading into the ninth inning before a leadoff home run by Paul Contreras tied the game at 7-7. Contreras went 3-for-4 with four runs, two RBI and two home runs.Â
Â
The Titans weren't done there. With one out, Cameron Kim singled before a Cam Burdick double put runners at second and third.Â
UCSB intentionally walked Hunter Meyer to load the bases and get to Esteban Olazaba. The freshman came through with a two-run single to give Fullerton a 9-7 lead. Olazaba had a 2-for-5 day with a career-high three RBI.Â
Â
Andrew Wright closed out the game to earn the win and improve to 3-4 on the year. Wright pitched 2.1 shutout innings while giving up three hits and striking out one.Â
The Titans started the game off strong, scoring two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. In the first inning it was an intentional walk to get to Meyer who answered with a two-run single, scoring Nick Miller and Contreras.Â
Â
UC Santa Barbara responded in the bottom of the second inning with four runs to take a 4-2 lead.Â
Fullerton slowly chipped in the middle innings, scoring one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.Â
In the fourth inning it was a Cade O'Hara single that scored Meyer to cut the Titans deficit to 4-3.Â
Â
The Titans scored two runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. With the bases loaded Meyer singled to right field to score Contreras and tie the game at 4-4. Meyer went 2-for-3 with a run and a career-high three RBI.Â
Â
Olazaba then beat out a double play ball to drive in Kim and give Fullerton a 5-4 advantage. The freshman duo of Meyer and Olazaba combined to go 4-for-8 with six RBI.Â
Fullerton extended its lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Contreras. The junior hit a home run in back-to-back at-bats and both off UCSB's Cole Tryba who had given up just two home runs all season.
Â
The Gauchos responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead before the Titans' rally in the ninth inning sealed the game.Â
The Titans look to secure the series victory in game three Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
