LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton defeated Long Beach State 6-2 in game three Sunday afternoon at Blair Field to secure the series victory. With the win the Titans improve to 17-17 on the year and 11-7 in Big West play.
Dylan Smith had his best start as a Titan, tossing eight shutout innings while giving up just four hits, walking one batter and striking out four. Smith earned the win to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Titans struck first for the third time in three games this weekend, scoring two runs in the top of the second to take an early lead.
Ty Thomas led-off the inning with a double followed by an Andrew Kirchner walk. With no outs and runners on first and second, Niko Lombardi singled to left field to bring home Thomas and give Fullerton a 1-0 lead. Lombardi recorded five RBI in the weekend series with at least one in all three games.
Freshman Hunter Meyer continued the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Kirchner from third base and extend the lead to 2-0.
The Titans extended their lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a Cade O'Hara sacrifice fly that scored Kirchner once again. Kirchner went 1-for-1 with two runs and a career-high four walks.
With two outs and a runner at first, Thomas hit a double off the wall in left field to score Paul Contreras and extend the lead to 4-0. Thomas went 3-for-5 with a run, an RBI and a career-high three doubles.
Fullerton extended the lead in the eighth playing perfect Titans Baseball. With runners at second and third, Eli Lopez laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that scored two runs to put the Titans up 6-0.
The Titans are back in action Tuesday night at Goodwin Field for a midweek meeting with San Diego. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
