LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton came up short in game two against Long Beach State, losing 4-3 on a walk-off in the ninth inning Saturday night at Blair Field. With the loss the Titans are 16-17 on the year and 10-7 in Big West play.Â
The Titans got on the board early in game two, scoring one run in the top of the first on a double by Niko Lombardi that scored Cameron Kim.Â
Long Beach State responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-1 lead.Â
Lombardi tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth on a solo home run to right field, his first home run of the season.Â
Long Beach State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by the Titans at home plate. With a runner at third the Titans played the infield in and got a perfect groundball to throw the runner out at home but an errant throw sailed over the catcher to give up the go-ahead run.Â
Fullerton came back to tie the game in the top of the eighth. Kim got the inning going with a one-out single before Andrew Kirchner drove him on a double to the gap in right center.Â
The Titans had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the ninth following a one-out triple by Cade O'Hara. However, a strikeout and a called out by the home plate umpire on the base path ended the top of the inning.Â
Long Beach State went on to walk the game off in the bottom of the ninth inning on a bases loaded single.Â
The two teams will meet for the rubber game Sunday afternoon at Blair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. The game time has been changed due to rain in the forecast in the morning.
