FULLERTON, Calif. ā Cal State Fullerton's offense came alive Sunday to defeat Xavier 16-7 in the series finale at Goodwin Field. The Titans improve to 4-7 on the year with the win.Ā
Fullerton recorded a season-high 17 hits on its way to scoring a season-high 16 runs in the win over Xavier. The Titans 16 runs is the most in a game since April 4, 2025 while 17 hits is the most since Mar. 22, 2025.Ā
After dropping the first two games of the series and being held to just two runs, the Titans offense got off to a much needed quick start.Ā
Fullerton scored four runs in the first inning, starting with a two-run home run by Ty Thomas.
The Titans didn't stop there, scoring two more runs in the inning thanks to a
Max Ortega RBI single to score
Nick Miller and a
Hunter Meyer RBI single that brought home
Paul Contreras.Ā
The Titans jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead after putting up another four spot in the second inning. It was once again Thomas who got the scoring started with a two-run home run with Andrew Kirchner on base.Ā
Cameron Kim kept the inning going with a double down the left field line before Paul Contreras smashed the second home run of the inning to put Fullerton up 8-0.Ā
Xavier got on the board in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs to cut the Titans lead to 8-3. The Musketeers added two more runs in the fifth inning to cut Fullerton's lead to just three runs, 8-5.Ā
The Titans had a quick response, scoring two runs in the home half of the fifth to regain a five-run lead, 10-5. After a leadoff double from Meyer, it was Kirchner's turn to send a ball over the wall. Kirchner went 2-for-3 on the day with four runs, two RBI and a career-high three walks.Ā
Fullerton added one run in the sixth inning on an errant throw to home plate, allowing Nick Miller to score and extend the lead to 11-6. Contreras got caught in a rundown between first and second, giving Miller time to steal home.
Xavier hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to cut Fullerton's lead to 11-7.Ā
The Titans responded once again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Waldie Perez, Eli Lopez and Kirchner drew walks to load the bases and set up Kim for a two-run single through the left side of the infield.Ā
Miller followed with a single to center field to score Kirchner from second base while extending the lead to 14-7.Ā
Fullerton added two insurance runs in the eighth inning. Kim found himself at the plate once again with the bases loaded and delivered another two-run single to score Perez and Lopez while giving the Titans a 16-7 advantage. Kim went 3-for-6 Sunday afternoon with one run and a career-high four RBI.Ā
Jayden Harper got the start on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out seven.Ā
Chris Hernandez earned the win to improve to 1-1 on the year after pitching 1.2 shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out one. Hernandez came on in relief in a big moment for the Titans. After already surrendering two runs in the fifth, Hernandez entered with runners on first and second and no outs, then quickly recorded three outs to end the inning and stifle Xavier's momentum.
Fullerton looks to carry its offensive power into Tuesday's game at No. 1 UCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
