Fullerton's Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short in Game Two Loss to Xavier

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton's late comeback effort fell short in the ninth inning as the Titans lost to Xavier, 3-2, in game two of the series Saturday evening at Goodwin Field. With the loss Fullerton drops to 3-7 on the season.

After being limited to just two hits on Friday night, the Titans bounced back in a big way Saturday, tallying nine hits at the plate. However, Fullerton still wasn't able to generate enough run production, leaving a total of 13 runners on base.

The Titans got another strong start on the mound, this time from Dylan Smith. The sophomore allowed three runs on five hits in six innings pitched while not issuing a walk and striking a tied for career-high six batters.

Xavier took the lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out double that scored a runner from first base.

Fullerton quickly answered in the home half of the inning on a triple by Ty Thomas to bring home Esteban Olazaba from second and tie the game at 1-1.

Xavier plated two runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead.

The Titans had another opportunity to counter in the same inning after a leadoff single by Paul Contreras and a double from Hunter Meyer put runners on second and third with no outs. However, Fullerton would leave the runners stranded to keep the deficit 3-1.

Dylan Nieto and Brady Dockan were exceptional in relief to keep the Titans within striking distance. Nieto tossed one scoreless inning, while Dockan delivered two no-hit frames and struck out three.

Eli Lopez looked to get the Titans going in the ninth inning with a leadoff double to bring the tying run to the plate. Xavier's center fielder then made back-to-back great catches to keep Lopez at second.

After a two-out walk by Andrew Kirchner, Cameron Kim delivered an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-2. The rally ended there with the Titans dropping game two of the series to Xavier.

Fullerton looks to stave off a series sweep in game three Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
