Titans Drop Close Game at Davis

DAVIS, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball fell to UC Davis 70-64 on Thursday at the University Union Credit Center in the Titans final Big West regular season match up against the Aggies.

In a battle between the third and fourth place sides, the Aggies finished the regular season sweep over the Titans.  The Titans fell to 15-11 overall and 11-5 in conference play.  The Titans remain in fourth place one game ahead of UC Santa Barbara and 1.5 games ahead of the University of Hawai'i.

The Titans took it down to the wire at the end after making it a one possession game with 16 seconds left.  But the Titans couldn't get the steal and had to foul at the end of the game to give the Aggies four late free throws at the end.

For the game, the Aggies outshot the Titans 52% to 41%.  The Titans actually had a better 3-point percentage than the Aggies who lead the conference after shooting 36% to the Aggies 32%.  However, the Aggies made four more three's than the Titans.  The Titans road free throw struggles continued after shooting 53% (8-for-15) from the line.  The Titans outrebounded the Aggies 38-to-28 for the game.  The Titans defense forced 20 turnovers and they got just below their average with 14 steals. Maddy Tauro led the Titans with 16 points.  Cristina Jones and Dylan Swindle both had 10 points.

After trading baskets to start the game, the Aggies pulled ahead by six points midway through the first.  Nicole Steiner entered the game and made an immediate impact after making a layup to cut the lead to two.

The Aggies led 16-11 after the first quarter.

The Aggies stretched their lead to nine points midway through the second quarter before the Titans came back.  The Titans cut the lead back down to 5 points after Maddy Tauro made an and 1 layup on a fastbreak.

Mimi Moon cut the lead to 4-points after following with her own 3-point play to make it a 32-28 game at halftime.

The Titans played their best basketball in the third quarter after outscoring UC Davis 24-to-19 for the quarter.  The Titans went on a 7-0 run to start the quarter and retake the lead over the Aggies.

Both sides traded baskets the rest of the way with the Titans taking a 3-point lead (52-49) behind two Dylan Swindle free-throws with 37 seconds. The Titans got the rebound on an Aggies shot with 13 seconds left but rather than hold the ball for the last show, the Titans went for a quick score which led to a rebound and a fast break from UC Davis.  Ryan Bennett was fouled with less than a second remaining and made two free throws to cut the Titans lead to one point (52-51) after three.

UC Davis went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and led 62-51 before Kya Pearson hit a three with 5:28 left in the game.  The Titans had to continue chipping away at the lead and Jana Falsdottir cut the lead down to five with 1:48 left (65-60) after making a three pointer.

The Titans forced a back court violation against the Aggies on their next possession.  Nicole Steiner made a second chance layup after pulling down her own offensive board and got fouled on the play but she couldn't complete the three point play so the Aggies led by three (65-62) with 1:19 left.

After trailing by four points (66-62) with 24 seconds left, the Titans once again had a chance at a three point play.  The Titans drew up a brilliant out of bounds play for Maddy Tauro who made the basket but couldn't make the free throw to make it a 1-pt game.  The Titans were forced to play the foul game after trailing 66-64.  The Aggies made four free throws to ice the game down the stretch as the Titans couldn't connect on their final attempts.

The Titans will host Cal State Bakersfield in their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
