FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team led for more than 50% of the game against UC Davis but couldn't hang on late against the Aggies in a 73-67 loss at Titan Gym on Thursday night.
The Titans fell to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
With a short handed squad, the Titans had four figures in double digits. Â
Talia Maxwell had a breakout game in her first start of the season posting a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Â
Cristina Jones posted her fourth double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds.Â
Dylan Swindle had 13 points while
Maddy Tauro had 14 points off the bench.  The Titans actually shot better than the Aggies for the game (38.2% vs 35.9%) but the Aggies made 13 three-pointers while the Titans made six treys. The Aggies shot 82.4% (14-for-17) from the charity stripe while the Titans shot just 56.3% (9-for-16) from the free throw line.  With leading rebounder
Nicole Steiner out, the Titans still out rebounded UC Davis 46-to-40 for the game. Â After forcing 43 turnovers in their last game, the Aggies only committed 13 turnovers against the Titans. Â The Titans had their second lowest total steal output with just 11 for the game.Â
The Titans hung tough with the Aggies in the early part of the game. Â After UC Davis opened up a 13-8 lead in the first quarter,
Talia Maxwell went to work to get the Titans back in the game and
Maddy Tauro hit a three-pointer to give the Titans a 15-14 lead over UC Davis.
Tauro ended the first quarter stripping the Aggies on defense and taking it coast to coast for a basket to give the Titans a 19-17 lead after one.Â
Both sides scored 17 points a piece in the second quarter. Â The Titans stretched their lead to 7 points (29-22) with 4:43 left in the half. Â
Madelynn Muniz hit a three-pointer to keep the 7-point advantage with 2:22 left. However, the Aggies went on a 7-2 run over the final two minutes to make it a two point game at halftime (36-34).
The Titans maintained their seven point lead early in the third quarter before the Aggies made three consecutive three-point baskets to take a 45-43 lead over the Titans. Â

Dylan Swindle hit baskets late in the third quarter as the Titans led 53-52 through three quarters.
The Aggies started the fourth quarter on a 8-6 run to take a lead over the Titans midway through the fourth quarter.
The Aggies went opened up a 70-63 lead over the Titans with 1:54 left in the game. Â The Titans went 2-for-4 from the free throw line on back-to-back possessions to make it a 70-65 game rather than a one possession game. Â The Titans defense couldn't come up with a steal as they played the foul game at the end of the quarter as the Aggies held on for the 73-67 win over the Titans.
The Titans will be back home on Saturday as they host UC Riverside. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Titan Gym.
