NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team fell 8-5 to No. 18 UC Santa Barbara in the 13th place game to close out the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday at the Marian Berger Aquatics Complex.
The Titans kept close to the Gauchos the whole game and never let the lead get more than two goals ahead of them until the final minute when the Titans played with an extra attacker and no goalkeeper.Â
Destiny Hernandez led the Titans with a multi-goal game. Â
Kendal Santos,
Jade Lonzo, and
Emme Doube-MacLeod all scored for the Titans.Â
Annabelle Sherman made 9 saves in the cage for the Titans.
The Gauchos scored first in the first quarter before
Destiny Hernandez equalized. Â The Gauchos led 2-1 after the first quarter.
Both sides scored a goal a piece in the second quarter as
Kendal Santos found the back of the net for the Titans.
Taylor Mason had a 5-meter penalty saved that could've made it a 3-3 game. UCSB lead 3-2 heading into the halftime break.
Jade Lonzo scored on a 5-meter penalty in the third quarter to make it a 3-3 game. Â The Gauchos scored twice before the quarter ended to take a 5-3 lead after three quarters.Â
In the fourth quarter, the Gauchos scored first to make it 6-3 before
Destiny Hernandez scored her second goal of the game to make it a 2-goal lead again for the Gauchos at 6-4. Â Emme Doubel-MacLeod brought the game within one goal after scoring to make it a 6-5 game. Â The Gauchos scored on a powerplay to restore the 7-5 two goal advantage. Â The Titans couldn't score down the final stretch to give UCSB their second win over the Titans this season.
The Titans will participate in the Convergence Tournament next weekend. Â They will play all of their games next Friday and Saturday at the Allred Aquatics Center at Chapman University.
