Moon's Career Night Leads Titans to Conference Opening Win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team opened up Big West play with a dominant 96-64 win at Cal Poly on Thursday night at the Mott Athletics Center.

Mimi Moon came into Thursday's game averaging 2.1 points per game and with just 15 points through seven games.  She led all scorers with a career high 23 points as she shot a very efficient 75% from the floor (6-for-8), beyond the arc (3-for-4), and went 8-for-10 at the charity stripe.  With the Titans leading scorer Cristina Jones out for the game, the rest of the team picked up the scoring as the team had a season high 96 points.  Out of the 10 players that played, nine of them got on the score sheet.  Nicole Steiner had 13 points and 9 rebounds with 8 of them being offensive boards.  Maddy Tauro scored another career high in San Luis Obispo with 18 points after returning from injury.  The Titans held the Big West leading scorer Vanessa McManus to 19 points after she came into the game averaging 23.3 points.  

The Titans had their best game offensively after shooting 49% from the floor (33-for-68).  The Titans shot 39% from beyond the arc (7-for-18) and had a great day at the charity stripe shooting 85% (23-for-27) after also benefiting from three Cal Poly lane violations.    The Titans defense forced a season high 37 turnovers and they also had a season high 23 steals.  The Titans converted those turnovers into 42 points.  They dominated inside the paint at 48-26 advantage.

After the game was tied at 7-7, the Titans went on a 10-5 run the rest of the quarter to take a 17-12 lead after one.  The Titans forced Cal Poly into 14 turnovers in the first quarter.
 

The Mustangs made it a two point game early to start the second quarter before Jana Falsdottir scored 5 straight points to regain a 7-point lead for the Titans.
 

Mimi Moon then took over the scoring for the Titans in the second quarter as she scored 11 points on a perfect 3-for-3 on three pointers and also two free throws.
 

The Titans led 39-28 heading into the halftime break. Through the first half alone against the Mustangs, the Titans forced 23 turnover and had 12 steals.

In the third quarter, the Titans had one of the best periods offensively all season after scoring 31 points.  Nicole Steiner had 9 points, Maddy Tauro had 8 points, and Mimi Moon also scored 8 points in the third. 

The Titans quickly came out of the halftime break with a 10-2 run to open a 49-30 lead.  After the Mustangs closed the lead back to 14 points with 41 seconds left, the Titans stretched it back out to a 20 point lead and led 70-50 after three. 
 

The Titans outscored the Mustangs 26-to-12 in the final frame.  Talia Maxwell led the Titans in scoring for the period with 8 points.    
 

The Titans will host the University of Hawai'i on Saturday for their conference home opener.  Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. vs the Rainbow Wahine.
