Steiner Clutch as Titans End Twelve Game Losing Streak to Hawaii

FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman Nicole Steiner scored the final four points for the Titans including two clutch throws with 3.2 seconds left as the women's basketball team hung on to an 82-80 victory over the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Saturday afternoon at Titan Gym.  

After the Titans had a 10-point lead to start the final quarter, the Rainbow Wahine went on a 15-2 run to start the fourth quarter and took a 71-68 lead over the Titans four minutes into the final frame. The Titans didn't panic and let the Hawai'i lead grow to more than five points before finally tying the game at 77-77 after Cristina Jones had a three point play with 1:33 left in the game.  Jones made the free throw to give the Titans a 78-77 lead. 
 

Hawaii tied the game at 78-78 on their ensuing possession after Bailey Flavell went 1-for-2 from the line.  Nicole Steiner made a putback basket to give the Titans the lead with 36 seconds left.  
 

Flavell responded for Hawai'i on a jumper of her own to keep the score tied at 80 a piece.  On the Titans final possession, Nicole Steiner got tripped up going to the basket and the freshman stepped up and made both her free throws to give the Titans an 82-80 lead. On Hawai'i's final play out of a timeout, they weren't able to inbound the ball cleanly and the Titans defense hung on to secure the win.

The Titans improved to 4-5 overall and moved to 2-0 in Big West play for the first time since the 2019-20 season and they also ended a 12-game losing streak to the University of Hawai'i that stretched back to Feb. 29th, 2020.  

For the game, the Titans shot 41.3% from the floor (33-for-80) while the Rainbow Wahine shot 50% (28-for-56).  The Titans only made two three pointers while the Rainbow Wahine went 9-for-20 from beyond the arc.The Titans had four players in double digit scoring.  Cristina Jones led the Titans with 22 points and six steals.  Nicole Steiner had her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  Dylan Swindle had 19 points and Maddy Tauro also had 14 points.  The Titans defense forced 27 Hawai'i turnovers which they converted to 31 points.  The Titans also outscored the Rainbow Wahine 56-to-36 on points inside the paint.  

The Titans and the Rainbow Wahine traded baskets early to start the game.  Hawai'i went ahead 16-9 with 1:42 left in the first quarter before the Titans went on a 8-0 run to finish the quarter.

The Titans stole the ball twice as Cristina Jones and Dylan Swindle wreaked havoc on the Hawaii backcourt.  The Titans ended up finishing the first quarter ahead 17-16.
 

Both sides scored 22 points a piece in the second quarter.  The Titans held onto the lead for most of the second quarter but were never able to grab more than 6-point lead.    The Titans held onto the lead for most of the second quarter but were never able to grab more than 6-point lead.  The Rainbow Wahine were able to cut the deficit back two one point towards the end of the second quarter to make it a 39-38 Titans lead heading into halftime.

The Titans had their best quarter offensively in the third quarter as they outscored the Rainbow Wahine 27-to-18.  After a three-pointer from Bailey Flavell to start the quarter gave UH the lead, the Titans went on a 9-2 run to open up a 48-43 lead.

After the Rainbow Wahine brought it to back to a 2-point lead at 48-46, the Titans went on another 10-3 run to take a 58-49 lead over Hawaii.
 

After stretching the lead to as much as 11 points (61-50) with 1:58 left, the Rainbow Wahine brought it back down seven points with 18 seconds left.  Dylan Swindle hit a three pointer to close out the third quarter with the Titans ahead by 10, 66-56.
 

The Titans did just enough in the fourth quarter as they were outscored by the Rainbow Wahine 24-to-16 in the final frame including the Rainbow Wahine starting the fourth period on a 15-to-2 scoring run.  

The Titans head back to non-conference play where they will host Portland State next Saturday.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Vikings.
