Titans Break Scoring Record To Close Out Non-Conference Play Over La Sierra

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team broke a 34 year old program record on Sunday afternoon as they defeated La Sierra 110-22 at Titan Gym in their final non-conference game of the season.

The previous program record was a 108-80 win set on March 7th, 1991 against New Mexico State.  The 88 point margin of victory was the second largest in program history, just three points behind the record of 91 points set on February 19th, 1970 against the now defunct university, Cal Western. This was the 23rd time in program history that the Titans held an opponent to less than 30 points and the first time since the 1974-75 season.  The 22 points allowed was the seventh lowest mark in program history and the last time the Titans allowed an opponent to score less than 22 points was an 86-21 win over UC Riverside on February 12th, 1975.

The Titans also set some other records in the game as well.  The 64 points scored in the first half were the most points scored in a single half, breaking the previous record of 58 set in the same March 7th, 1991 game against New Mexico State.  The 28 steals were a program record, breaking the previous record of 25 steals against CSUN set on November 23rd, 1990.

All 12 Titans got on the scoring sheet today as they had five players reach double figures in scoring.  Cristina Jones led the team with 25 points in just 16 minutes of action.  Dylan Swindle had 13 points, Maxine Sutisna had 12 points, Mimi Moon had 12 points, and Nicole Steiner had 10 points. The Titans shot above 50% for the first time this season, shooting 50.6% (44-for-87) from the floor.  The Titans scored 78 of their 110 points inside the paint. The Titans had their best rebounding game of the season, hauling in 63 rebounds.  The Titans forced a season high 40 turnovers combined with a season high 28 steals which led to 47 points off turnovers.  The Titans held  the Golden Eagles to shooting just 13.5% from the floor (7-for-52).

The Titans completely dominated the first quarter as they held their opponent scoreless and led 31-0 after the first period.  The Titans forced 16 turnovers in the first quarter alone and held the Golden Eagles to 0-for-8 from the floor.

The Titans started the second quarter on a 15-0 run capped by three treys from Kya Pearson, Jana Falsdottir, and Dylan Swindle.  The Titans took a 46-0 lead before the Golden Eagles scored their first basket at the 5:10 mark in the second quarter.

The Titans led 64-to-6 at halftime after holding the Golden Eagles to just six points in the first half.

The Titans outscored La Sierra 26-to-9 in the third quarter and led 90-to-15 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Titans broke the 100 point barrier for the 14th time in program history with 5:37 left in the game as Nicole Steiner completed a putback.

With 38 seconds left in the game, Talia Maxwell tied the program scoring record after making the first of two free throws. After getting the ball back from La Sierra, Mimi Moon got fouled on the Titans final possession with one second left and drilled both free throws to break the 34 year old program scoring record.

The Titans will resume Big West play this week when they take on their fellow BWC foes with a 2-0 record to start the season.  The Titans head to UCSB on Thursday before taking on UC Irvine on Saturday.  Both games will be on the road.
