Last Minute Goal Leads Titans To Semifinals

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team advanced to the 2025 Big West Championship semifinals in dramatic fashion after scoring on a Roadrunners own goal with 84 seconds left in the game to beat Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 on Sunday at Titan Stadium in the Big West Championship First Round.

The No. 3 Titans moved to 14-2-3 overall for the season.  They ended a 4-game losing streak in the Big West Championship after falling in their first games from 2021-to-2024.  The Titans advanced to Thursday's Big West Championship Semifinal where they will take on the No. 2 Cal Poly Mustangs.

The Titans who just played the Roadrunners on Thursday once again outshot their opponents 17-to-10 for the game.  The Titans had nine shots on goal to the Roadrunners three shots on goal.

The Titans got off to a very quick start to the game after Cayla Oliveira had a shot saved 21 seconds into the game. Kyah Otholt and Isabella Contreras both had shots saved in the half while Sienna Pimentel hit the crossbar on a header. The Titans outshot Bakersfield 6-to-3 in the first half.

The Titans came out attacking strong in the second half and thought they earned  penalty kick early in the second half after a handball in the box.  But after video review, the head referee waived play on and the Roadrunners had a spell of momentum.

Isaac Ranson and the defense had to make a triple save in the 65th minute.

Ranson came up big again in the 78th minute to deny the Roadrunners from scoring.

The Titans finally found the break through in the 89th minute of play.  Shannon Nettekoven played a ball to Isabella Cruz inside the box who passed it back to Nettekoven.  Nettekoven crossed it towards Sail Bozinovic but the ball went off a Bakersfield defender into the net to give the Titans a 1-0 lead and their second straight opponent own goal at home.

The Titans were able to see out the final 84 seconds of play to secure the 1-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield and advance out of the 1st Round.

Isaac Ranson continued his storied season and career by picking up his 13th clean sheet of the season. Ranson also moved into a tie for first in the country with those 13 shutouts. He moved into a tie for second place all-time in the Big West with 31 career shutouts with Danielle deSeriere (UCI/2007-10).  The Titans defense picked up their nation leading 14th shutout of the season.  Isaac Ranson has the second best save percentage in the country at .900 and also the second best goals against average at .380.

The Titans will take on Cal Poly on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 PM at Cal State Northridge in the first Big West Semifinal of the afternoon. The Titans lost 2-0 at Cal Poly on October 12th, in their second loss of the season.
