SANTA BARBARA,Calif. - The historic unbeaten start to a season for the Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team came to an end on Thursday night at Harder Stadium in a 1-0 loss against UC Santa Barbara.
The Titan fell to 10-1-2 for the season. It still is the best start in program history by six games. Â
The Titans had to play from behind for the first time this season when UC Santa Barbara scored in the 32nd minute. The Titans have previously led in every game or were tied with their opponents. Â
The Titans were the aggressors to start the game and were outshooting the Gauchos 4-2 in the early period. Â However, a quick UCSB counterattack exposed the Titans defense in the 32nd minute. Â Natalie Sheffey sent a cross into the box with one just Titan defender in the box and two Gaucho attackers waiting. Â The first Gaucho attacker missed the ball but Isabella Ong was there to one time the cross with her right foot into the Titans net to make it a 1-0 game for the Gauchos.
The Titans went into halftime with a 7-6 shot advantage.Â
The Titans also came out aggressive in the second half. Â
Isabella Cruz drew a yellow card from UCSB's Mya Delaney in the 51st minute. Â Nearly five minutes later, Cruz drew a second yellow card from the same Gauchos defender, forcing them to play with 10 players the final 33:32 of the game.
Despite playing nearly the final 30 minutes in the Gaucho side of the field, the Titans couldn't break the Gaucho's defense. The Titans outshot the Gauchos 7-to-2 in the second half and 14-to-8 for the game.
Isaac Ranson made one save for the game. Â Ranson remains tied with Karen Bardsley with 26 shutouts for number one in program history. Â
The Titans head to Cal Poly on Sunday for the second game of their three game road trip. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
