Big Second Half Leads Titans to Victory in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team concluded a succesful two game roadtrip after defeating UC Santa Barbara 64-61 on Saturday afternoon at the Thunderdome for their second straight conference win. 

The Titans who trailed 38-29 at halftime, flipped the script in the second half.  The Titans outscored the Gauchos 35-to-23 for the second half as they continued their strong play late in games. 

In a match-up that featured two of the top four scorers in the conference, Aaliyah Stanton came out ahead with 19 points on a solid 8-for-14 shooting night. The Titans held the No. 2 scorer in the league, Alyssa Marin to a team-high 13 points.  The Titans also saw double-digit efforts from Eva Levingston (10 points, 5 rebounds), Aixchel Hernandez (10 points, 6 rebounds), and Emily Strachan with 10 points.  The Titans had their best shooting game offensively all year after shooting 52% from the floor on 25-for-48 shooting.  They also were 50% from the beyond the arc, going 4-for-8.  The Titans held the Gauchos to just 36% shooting.  The Titans forced 16 turnovers from the Gauchos and had 10 steals. 

The Titans and Gauchos traded baskets early to start the game before the Gauchos pulled away to a 12-4 lead.

The Titans cut it to a 4-point lead at 14-10 after Aaliyah Stanton made a tough basket inside the lane.    However the Gauchos would pull ahead to a 18-10 lead after a late foul on a three point attempt saw the Gauchos make all three free throws.  The Titans got a basket from Aixchel Hernandez before the quarter ended to make it a 18-12 game.  
 

The Gauchos began slowly separating themselves away from the Titans in the second quarter but the Titans were able to keep the game within striking distance for most of the period.  Demonnie Lagway made a tough layup and Jana Falsdottir nailed a triple to keep the Gaucho lead manageable.  
 

The Gauchos hit two late three-pointers in the quarter to take a 9-point lead but Madelynn Muniz made a triple to keep the the lead from growing to double-digit points before halftime. 
 

The Gauchos led 38-to-29 at halftime.  

The Titans had their best quarter of the game in the third quarter as they outscored the Gauchos 21-to-14 for the quarter.    

Emily Strachan set the tone of the quarter early after her layup went in just before the shot clock buzzer on the Titans first possession of the second half.
    

After the Gauchos led 42-35 with 6:36 left, the Titans went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead since the 1st quarter over the Gauchos.  Stanton and Hernandez made jumpers and Madelynn Muniz hit a big arc'ing three-pointer in front of the Titans bench to tie the game at 42-42.
 

Both sides came alive offensively during the final four minutes of the third quarter and the Titans trailed 52-50 at the end of the third quarter.

The Gauchos opened up a 5-point lead early in the fourth quarter but the Titans kept staying in the fight and keeping it a one or two possession game.  After the Gauchos led by three (59-56) with 4:14 left in the game, the comeback was on for the Titans. Aaliyah Stanton made two free throws and Eva Levingston made a jumper to give the Titans a 60-59 lead with 2:47 left. 
 

The Gauchos briefly regained the lead and me it a 61-60 game after making two free throws with 2:15 left.  Eva Levingston drove to the basket and was hacked and made the basket and the free-throw to complete the three-point lead and give the Titans a 63-61 lead with 1:56 left in the game.
 

The Titans played solid defense down the stretch after stealing a ball on an inbound pass coming out of a UCSB timeout with 50 seconds left.  The Titans turned the ball over on their possession handing the ball back to the Gauchos with 19 seconds left.  However, the Gauchos couldn't connect on two three-point attempts during the final seconds handing the Titans their second straight win.

The Titans will be idle on Thursday before hosting the University of Hawai'i next Saturday.  Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Rainbow Wahine.
