FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo team opened the 2025 season with two dominant wins at home against Cal State Monterey Bay and Ottawa University Arizona.
The Titans scored 34 combined goals in two games and allowed just 13 goals against for the day.
CSUF 13, CSUMB 5
In the first game of the 2025 season, the Titans defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 13-5. The Titans opened up the 2024 season last year against the same Otters and needed a sudden death goal to claim victory. This year, the Titans cruised their way to their first win of the season.
The Titans had four players with two goals (
Destiny Hernandez,
Taylor Mason,
Mia Solorzano, and
Lacey Hall). The Titans also got one goal a piece from
Madelyn Halva,
Neida Torres,
Jade Lonzo,
Mikka Von Scherr, and
Elise Bliss.
Destiny Hernadez scored the first goal of the 2025 season for the Titans.
The Otters equalized to make it a 1-1 game before the Titans got goals from
Mia Solorzano and
Lacey Hall. Solorzano scored her first goal since getting injured early last February and missing most of the season.
The Otters would get one back before
Mikka Von Scherr scored to make it a 4-2 game after one.
The Titans outscored the Otters 3-0 in the second as freshman
Jade Lonzo opened her Titans goal scoring account.
Taylor Mason scored before halftime after nearly going coast to coast to make it a 7-2 game heading into halftime.
Both sides scored two goals a piece in the third quarter as
Neida Torres scored her first career goal for the Titans after missing all of last season to injury.
In the fourth quarter, the Titans outscored the Otters 4-1 for the period with
Elise Bliss opening up her Titans goal scoring account and scoring the final goal of the game.
CSUF 21, Ottawa University Arziona 8
The Titans defeated Ottawa University Arizona 21-to-8 in the second game of the day.
The Titans were able to rotate in almost every player against an undermanned Spirit squad that had only eight players. The freshman
Elise Bliss led the Titans with five goals and one assist. Fellow freshman
Abby Lockman scored four goals and tallied one assist. Another freshman
Jade Lonzo picked up a hat trick.
Gabrielle Zaretskiy and junior transfer
Isabella Schulze also scored a brace in the game.
Tess Henke,
Kendal Santos, and
Hannah Reekstin picked up their first career goals for the Titans during the game.
It was a 3-1 game after the first quarter before turning into a lopsided affair. The Titans scored 8 times in the quarter and took an 11-3 lead into halftime. Bliss had a hat trick in the second quarter.
The Titans added five goals a piece in the third and fourth quarter with
Abby Lockman scoring all four of her goals in the second half and three in the fourth quarter.
The Titans will take on CUI and Biola tomorrow at the Beach Invitational. The game times are set for 2:15 PM against Concordia and 7:15 PM against Biola.
