Titans Open Up The Season with a Loss at Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball gave away the lead late in a 59-57 loss at Pepperdine's Firestone Fieldhouse to open the 2024-25 season.

After leading for most of the game, Ella Brubaker made a layup for the Waves with 51 seconds left to put Pepperdine ahead 59-57. 

The Titans led by as much as 10 points with 4:17 left in the game couldn't generate much offense over the final four minutes.  Aaliyah Stanton made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:49 left as the Titans still led 57-50.

The Waves then went on a 9-0 run to close out the game.  After Pepperdine made their go ahead basket with 51 seconds left, Aixchel Hernandez missed an open shot with 23 seconds left and the Waves rebounded the ball.  However, the Titans got a second chance after the Waves committed a turnover with 14 seconds left to hand the Titans the ball back.  Aaliyah Stanton had a missed layup while Eva Levingston couldn't sink a desperation mid-range jumper to send the game into overtime.

The new look Titans played almost every body available for the game.  Sophomore transfer guard Aaliyah Stanton led the Titans with 13 points while freshman guard Maddy Tauro scored 12 points in her collegiate debut.  Aixchel Hernandez played a full 40 minutes and led the team with 10 rebounds and seven points.  

The Titans shot 37% (23-for-63) from the floor while the Waves shot an efficient 47% (22-for-47).  The Titans who were the best free throw shooting team in the Big West last season at 76.1% shot a poor 40% from the line going 8-for-18.

Emily Strachan scored first points of the new season to start the game for the Titans. Her and Demonnie Lagway combined for all 10 points the Titans scored in the first quarter as they led 10-8.
 

The Titans and Waves continued to trade baskets for the start of the second quarter.  Eva Levingston scored two baskets for the Titans coming out of the media time out to put the Titans ahead 20-19.
 

The Titans finished the first half on a 9-2 run as Aaliyah Stanton scored the final five points on an open three and a fastbreak layup.  The Titans lead 27-20 at the halftime break.
 

The Titans continued their strong play to start the second half as they pushed the lead to 14 points.  Demonnie Lagway started the scoring after swishing a layup.  Aaliyah Stanton and Genna Wienecke hit back-to-back three pointers.
 
 

The Waves started crawling back into the game as they brought the lead down to four points before Aaliyah Stanton made a layup before the period ended to make it a 46-40 game.
 

Maddy Tauro took off in the fourth quarter after she scored eight of her 12 points in the quarter.  She kept the Titans lead steady and Eva Levington made a jumper at 4:17 to make it a 56-46 game before the Waves made their comeback.
 

The Titans went scoreless over their final 2:49 to hand the game over to the Waves.  THe Titans led for 32 minutes off the game while the Waves only led for 3:04; 

The Titans will fly out to New York City for the weekend when they take on Fordham University and Long Island University.  Tip-off is set for 3:30 PM PST against the Rams on Friday.
