BROOKLYN, NY - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team were defeated 63-52 against Long Island University at the Steinberg Wellness Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Titans fell to 0-3 overall for the season while the Sharks picked up their first win of the season.
The Titans were outshot 44.4% compared to the Titans 34.6% for the game. Â The Titans were outrebounded 39-to-32 and once again the other side heavily dominated the points in the paint with the Sharks outscoring the Titans 40-to-18 inside the paint.
Madelynn Muniz led the Titans with 13 points and made three three-pointers for the game. Â
Demonnie Lagway was the only other Titan in double figures with 11 points.
The Titans trailed early to start the game before a late Titan surge in the first quarter gave them the lead. Â After consecutive buckets from
Aixchel Hernandez cut it to an 11-8 lead. Â The Titans got back-to-back threes from
Jana Falsdottir and
Madelynn Muniz to take a 14-13 lead after the first quarter.
LIU jumped to a 22-17 lead in the second quarter at the 7:08 mark. Â The Titans then went on a 10-0 scoring run and held the Sharks scoreless for almost seven minutes as the Sharks made a layup near the end of the period.Â
The Titans took a 27-24 lead into halftime, the second game this season where the Titans led at the halftime break. Â
The Titans continued to hold the lead over the Titans before the momentum completely switched midway through the third quarter. Â After
Emily Strachan picked up her fourth foul and sent a Shark to the line, the Sharks got an offensive rebound and
Eva Levingston picked up a foul to send the Sharks right back to the line where they tied the game at 33-33. Â
Demonnie Lagway hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 36-36 before the Sharks took the lead again.
The Titans got a late prayer floater from
Madelynn Muniz before the quarter ended as the Sharks led 40-39 after three quarters.
Eva Levingston scored the first basket of the fourth quarter on a layup to give the Titans their last lead of the game at 41-40. The Sharks then went on a 11-3 scoring run and led 51-43 before the Titans would get free throws from
Aaliyah Stanton with 4:11 left to play to make it a 6-point game at 51-45. Â However, the Sharks outscored the Titans 23-to-13 for the fourth quarter and pull away with the comeback win over the Titans.Â
The Titans will head back to California and host Sacramento State for their home opener on Thursday, November 14th.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Titan Gym.
