FULLERTON, Calif. --- Hawai'i won its first outright Big West Championship with a 4-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton at Titan Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
The Rainbow Wahine (14-6, 8-0 BWC) will be the No. 1 seed at next week's Big West Conference Championship, while the Titans (18-3, 5-3) will be the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed CSUN (9-11, 3-5) at 11 a.m., Friday in the quarterfinals at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
For the first time this season, Cal State Fullerton lost the doubles point as Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova defeated Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles, ending the pair's 14-match win streak.
In a match of two ranked teams, No. 68 Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma edged No. 51 Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela, 7-5, snapping the duo's 13-match win streak.
With a 1-0 lead, UH's Michelle Pits defeated Danielle Pham, 6-1, 6-0, at the bottom of the order to take a 2-0 advantage.
Marina Hruba moved past Karla Portalatin, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to give the Rainbow Wahine a 3-0 lead.
Nikola Dolakova's 6-3, 6-3 victory over Masako Makiba at No. 5 singles clinched the winning point for Hawai'i.
Notes: Cal State Fullerton suffered its first doubles loss of the season…the Titans and Matadors will play one another for the second straight year in the Big West quarterfinals.
