SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Freshmen Camille De Leon and Alexis Valenzuela began play at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships by winning their opening matches at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.

Hosted by San Diego State and the University of San Diego, Valenzuela defeated fellow Big West participant, Sarah Stadfelt of UC Irvine, 6-4; 6-3, in the round of 128.

Also in the round of 128, De Leon defeated Dora Somoracz of San Diego State, 6-2; 5-7; 6-1.

The reward for Valenzuela after winning her opening match, was squaring off against Sabrina Santamaria of USC, the nation's No. 1 ranked player in ITA singles. Valenzuela offered the nation's No. 1 player a battle in a 6-3, 6-4 loss.

De Leon also lost her match in the round of 64, falling the to the No. 13 seed in the bracket, UCLA's Jennifer Brady, 6-0; 6-0.

Also playing in the round of 128 was Megan Sandford, who fell in three sets, 7-5; 4-6; 6-2, to UC Santa Barbara's Kaiulani Boyer. Rebecca Faltusz of Hawai'i edged Fullerton's Jessica Pepa, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 128.

Senior Morgan McIntosh received a first-round bye, but in the round of 64 fell to USC's Zoe Katz, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Kalika Selvcove also lost in the round of 64, 6-2; 6-2, to Loyola Marymount's Kristine Kouyoumjian.

Cal State Fullerton returns to action tomorrow at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
