FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's soccer team defeated Cal Poly 1-0 on Wednesday night at Titan Stadium.
The Titans improved to 5-2-4 overall for the season and 2-0-1 in Big West play to remain at the top of the conference standings after three rounds. The Titans defeated a Mustangs team that inflicted two of the Titans three losses last season with the last one ending the Titans season in the Big West Championship Semifinal.
The Titans scored the only goal of the game in the 7th minute after
Skye Johnson scored her first goal of the season. After a short corner from
Riley O'Brien to
Cassie Villanueva, Villanueva dribbled past her defender and whipped in a cross that deflected off Johnson into the goal to give the Titans an early 1-0 lead.Â
Â
Cassie Villanueva continued her streak of getting at least one point in six straight games.  She has had a goal contribution in nine of the ten games she has played so far this year and is second in the Big West Conference with 18 points on six goals and six assists. Â
In the first half,
Sasha Amezcua had a couple shots saved as the Titans outshot Cal Poly 7-2 in the first half
The Titans had a couple good looks in the second half as Villanueva and
Camryn Cruz had shots on goal saved. Â
Sail Bozinovic just missed wide right towards the end of the game. Â Annika Smith led the Mustangs attack in the second half but the Titans defense held strong to keep them off the board. Â Smith had a header go just high on a corner kick and a late shot blocked off another corner kick in the final minute to give the Titans the shutout.
In the second half, the Titans once again outshot Cal Poly 8-to-5 to make it 15-to-7 for the game.
Allison Craycroft and the defense earned their fourth shutout of the season. Â Craycroft made two saves for the game.
The Titans head to Utah Valley for the first time as Big West opponents on Saturday, October 3rd. Â Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. PST/6:00 p.m. MT. Â The Titans have played the Wolverines just twice in program history with a 3-0 win at home and a 2-1 loss in Orem in their last meeting in 2019.
