Titans Rally Past UC San Diego for Second Straight Win

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer earned its first road victory of the season after defeating UC San Diego 2-1 Wednesday night. With their second consecutive win, the Titans improve to 2-3-3 on the year. 

Fullerton surrendered the first goal of the game, falling behind 1-0 in the 38th minute of play. 

The Titans responded quickly. After a great ball from Armin Tehrani, Tarek Ibessaine found himself all alone down the right side of the field before firing a shot past the goalkeeper to level the match at 1-1.

Ulises Grado put the Titans ahead 2-1 with 26 seconds remaining in the first half. However, VAR disallowed the goal after concluding that the ball crossed the endline prior to the pass to Grado. 

The Titans dominated the second half from start to finish, controlling possession and consistently applying pressure in the attacking third throughout the final 45 minutes. Fullerton out-shot UC San Diego 12-5 in the second half, with five of the 12 shots on goal. 

For the second straight game, Fernando Valenzuela found the back of the net for what would be the game-winning goal. Jose de la Torre made a great run before finding Valenzuela who finished with his left foot in the 76th minute. 

Valenzuela leads the Titans with 11 points on five goals and one assist. His five goals leads The Big West Conference while his 11 points ranks second. 

Fullerton is back in San Diego this weekend for a meeting with San Diego State Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
