FULLERTON, Calif. – The Titans hosted day one of the Fullerton Tournament on Friday and dropped both to Pomona-Pitzer and UC San Diego.
Ethan MacLeod led the team with five goals on the day and two assists.
Titans 8, Pomona-Pitzer 10
The Titans opened up the tournament in a 10-8 loss against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Friday morning. The Titans were scoreless in the first quarter and only allowed the Sagehens to score one goal.
In the second,
Ryan O'Donovan recorded the first Titans goal at home, just 40 seconds in. The Sagehens tallied two before MacLeod scored his first of the day. In the next 50 seconds, Pomona fired one in and
Jason Joseph netted one to keep the Titans within reach. Pomona-Pitzer tallied one more before the half, giving them a 5-3 lead heading into halftime.
The Sagehens got the second half started with back-to-back goals before
Jace Peterson and MacLeod went back-to-back for Fullerton. Peterson scored on a powerplay, and MacLeod recorded a successful penalty shot. Both the Sagehens and Titans recorded a goal before the end of the third for a 9-6 score going into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was the only time the Titans outscored Pomona with their two goals to one. MacLeod and Joseph were the two Titans to score in the fourth, both completing a hat-trick against the Sagehens.
MacLeod and Joseph led Fullerton with three goals each. The pair of Titans also tallied a steal each.
Ethan Ivey defended the cage for the entire game and recoded eight saves.
Titans 9, UC San Diego 16
The Titans dropped game two of the Fullerton Tournament by a score of 9-16 to Big West opponent, UC San Diego. MacLeod got the game started with a goal in the first 30 seconds, but the Tritons scored four straight to take an early 4-1 lead.
Francisco Paredes fired one past the keeper on a Titans powerplay to trail UCSD by two at the end of the first.
On paper, the second quarter matchup was identical to the first as the Tritons scored four and Fullerton posted two.
Samuel Branco and Merritt tallied the final two Titans goals of the half. CSF trailed 8-4 at the end of the first half.
The Titans shined in the third period, scoring three against UC San Diego's two. Joseph logged his first of the game on a powerplay before UCSD tallied back-to-back goals.
Tony Benedetti and
Jason Honey answered back with a pair of goals to send the game to the fourth with a 10-7 score.
The Tritons outscored Fullerton 6-2 in the final frame. MacLeod recorded his second of the game and
Carmelo Bangs scored the final Titans goal of the day. MacLeod led once again with his two goals and one steal. Bangs tallied three assists against the Tritons on Friday evening.
The Titans are back in action at 9 a.m. on Saturday against Air Force and then they are set to close out the tournament against Chapman at 5 p.m.
