FULLERTON, Calif. – The Fullerton Titans hosted the final day of the Fullerton Tournament on Saturday where they faced Air Force and Chapman. The Titans fell 17-11 to Air Force on Saturday morning, and took down Chapman 16-13 Saturday evening.
Titans 11, Air Force 17
The Titans fell in an 11-17 battle against the Air Force Falcons.
Ethan MacLeod followed his recent routine, scoring the first goal of the game on a penalty shot. The Falcons scored two in a row to take an early lead before
Denes Dobi began his impressive day. Dobi scored on a powerplay to tie the game. Air Force went on to tally three more, but
Ethan Cooney was the only Titan to score before the end of the period.
Air Force entered the second quarter with a 5-3 lead before opening the quarter with another goal. Dobi,
Ethan Merritt and
Luke Porter matched the Falcons' three goals before the break. The Titans trailed 6-8 at the half.
The Falcons outscored the Titans 5-3 again in the third period. Dobi scored for the hat trick before
Carmelo Bangs tallied two for the Titans. Fullerton still trailed 9-13 going into the final frame.
Gavin Shea started the fourth quarter with a Titans goal and
Marton Thuroczy recorded the second and final goal. Air Force tacked on another four in the fourth.
Dobi had a hat trick and a steal against the Falcons. MacLeod logged assists to lead the Titans while Merritt and
Ryan O'Donovan tallied two each.
Ethan Ivey got the start in the cage and tallied three saves.
Cy Hammerstrom defended the cage for the final five minutes and recorded four saves.
Titans 16, Chapman 13
The Titans earned their first win of the weekend against the Chapman Panthers in the final game of the Fullerton Tournament with a 16-13 final score. Dobi and MacLeod led the team in goals again along with
Samuel Branco.
Dobi scored first before Chapman scored on back-to-back powerplays. Cooney, Thuroczy and Porter shut down the first quarter with goals to give the Titans a 4-3 lead going into the second period.
In the second, Fullerton and Chapman played back and forth until the two-minute mark when MacLeod, Merritt and
Jason Honey logged three consecutive goals, outscoring the Panthers 4-3 again. CSF led 8-6 at halftime.
Merritt got the second half started with a goal and Chapman followed with back-to-back goals. The Titans then went on to score six straight, taking a 15-8 lead. The Panthers recorded a goal at the one second mark, but Fullerton still led 15-9 heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter was the only time Chapman had a chance to catch up to the Titans as they scored four to Branco's one goal. Branco recorded a hat trick along with three assists against the Panthers. Thuroczy also had three assists and a steal.
The Titans are back at home next Friday, September 18 at 12 p.m. against Fresno Pacific and Cal Lutheran at 6 p.m. for the Fullerton Mini Tournament.
