Negrete and Wright Deal to Take Game One Over Cal Poly

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton defeated Cal Poly 4-3 in game one Friday evening at Goodwin Field. With the win the Titans move to 22-26 on the year and 14-11 in Big West play.Ā

The Titans got the start they needed, scoring two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Nick Miller and Paul Contreras started the inning with a single and a double, respectively, to put runners on second and third with no outs.Ā

Cameron Kim brought home the first run of the game on a productive infield out to score Miller. Freshman Esteban Olazaba followed with a base hit through the middle of the infield to score Contreras and give Fullerton a 2-0 lead.Ā

Cal Poly responded with two runs of their own in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2.Ā

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Contreras came through with a looping single along the right field line to score Niko Lombardi and Cam Burdick to take the lead right back, 4-2. A Cal Poly throwing error put Lombardi onboard and Burdick produced an infield single to put baserunners on for Contreras.Ā

The Titans had several opportunities throughout the game to add to their lead, including a leadoff triple by Contreras in the fifth, but were unable to capitalize. Contreras continued his hot streak at the plate with a 4-4 performance, falling a home run short of a cycle, while adding a run and two RBI. After his 4-for-4 day the junior is hitting .348 with 35 runs and 32 RBI.Ā

The Mustangs tallied one run in the seventh, a solo home run to right field shortened the Titan lead to 4-3.Ā

Mikiah Negrete did what he's done all season,Ā battled on the mound to give Fullerton a chance at taking the series opener. The senior allowed three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched while walking two and striking out five to improve to 8-3 on the year. With his five strikeouts against Cal Poly, Negrete surpasses 250 career strikeouts.Ā

Andrew Wright closed out the game in dominant fashion. The southpaw entered the game in the seventh inning with one out and runners on first and second and got out of the inning on two pitches. Wright allowed just one hit in the final 2.1 innings while striking out a tied for career-high five batters.Ā

The Titans look to secure the series victory in game two Saturday at Goodwin Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
