Mistakes Cost Titans Game One Against UC Davis

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the series opener against UC Davis by a final score of 7-6 Friday night at Goodwin Field. With the loss the Titans fall to 21-23 on the year and 13-9 in Big West play.

The Titans started the game off strong, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the third inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Paul Contreras singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Cade O'Hara.

With two outs, Cameron Kim roped a single to left center field to drive in Contreras and put the Titans up 2-0.

UC Davis answered in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Titans lead to 2-1.

Fullerton had a quick response of its own, scoring two runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. In the fourth it was O'Hara who drove in a run on a single up the middle to score Hunter Meyer from second base.

Contreras picked up his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Niko Lombardi from third and put Fullerton up 4-1. Contreras went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

The Titans added one more run in the fifth on an RBI single by Meyer to score Kim to extend the lead to 5-1. Kim went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.

UC Davis scored five runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-5 lead. The Titans walked three batters and had two wild pitches in the inning to aid UC Davis' comeback.

Fullerton responded with one run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 6-6. Kim led-off the inning with a double before a sacrifice bunt advanced him to third. Kim would then score on a strike three wild pitch to tie the game.

A couple costly mistakes by the Titans gave the game away in the ninth. A fielding error on a routine fly-out allowed the UC Davis leadoff batter to reach third before another fielding error on a routine fly-out allowed the runner to score and put the Aggies up 7-6.

Andrew Wright had a gutsy performance out of the bullpen and drew the loss due to no fault of his own. Wright pitched three innings, giving up just two hits and one unearned run while striking out five batters.
