FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton rallied late in the game to defeat UC Riverside, 5-2, and clinch the series victory. With the win the Titans improve to 14-15 on the year and 8-6 in Big West play.Â
The Titans were held scoreless for six innings before breaking through for three runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead.Â
Eli Lopez and Niko Lombardi got the inning started with back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt by Hunter Meyer put them in scoring position.Â
Nick Miller got the Titans on the board with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lopez from third.Â
After an intentional walk to Paul Contreras put runners on first and second with two outs, Cameron Kim singled to third base before a throwing error by UC Riverside allowed Lombardi and Contreras to score.Â
Fullerton added two insurance runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Max Ortega set the table with a leadoff single followed by a sacrifice bunt and a Lopez walk.Â
With one out and runners at first and second, Lombardi ripped a double to left field to bring home pinch runner, Logan Hart, from second base. Lombardi went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.Â
The Titans then went back to small ball as Hunter Meyer laid down a perfect bunt to score Lopez from third and extend the lead to 5-2. Lopez went 2-for-3 on the night with two runs and a walk.Â
While the Titans late rally is what won the game, Bobby Mahoney's poise on the mound is what kept them in the game. After giving up two runs (one earned) in the first inning, Mahoney allowed just one hit over the next six innings. After the first inning, Mahoney didn't allow another hit until the seventh inning and saw just two base runners due to an error and a walk.Â
Mahoney earned the win to improve to 2-2 after giving up just two runs (one earned) on three hits while pitching a career-high seven innings and striking out a career-high seven batters.Â
The Titans look to sweep the weekend series against UC Riverside in game three Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
