SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton dropped the series opener against UC Santa Barbara Friday night by a final score of 8-3 at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Titans are now 19-21 on the year and 11-8 in Big West play.Â
The Gauchos struck first, capitalizing on some self-induced mistakes by the Titans. Back-to-back hit-by-pitches set up a sacrifice fly that allowed Santa Barbara to score the game's first run and take a 1-0 lead.Â
Santa Barbara furthered their lead in the following innings, a two-run home run in the second and a solo homer in the third and fifth gave the Gauchos a 5-0 lead.Â
Eli Lopez snapped the scoreless spell in the sixth inning with a looping base hit into left field to score Andrew Kirchner from second base to cut the deficit to 5-1.Â
The Gauchos immediately responded with one run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. UCSB added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run home run to extend its lead to 8-1.
Fullerton scored a pair of runs in the eighth on a Cade O'hara base hit into center field that scored Kirchner and Lopez. Kirchner went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk while Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.Â
The Titans look to even the series with UCSB in game two Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
