Titans Secure Fifth Seed after sweeping CSUN at Home

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's basketball team secured the 5th seed in next week's Big West Championship after defeating the CSUN Matadors 81-60 at home at Titan Gym on Saturday.

The Titans improved to 17-13 overall and 13-7 in conference play.  They were picked to finish 10th in the preseason conference standings and they secured just their second winning season in the past 35 years and there most conference wins in a season (13) since the 1990-91 season.  

The Titans who overwhelmed the Matadors in the first matchup by forcing 42 turnovers and wracking up 25 steals didn't have as crazy numbers defensively in the rematch.  The Titans forced 26 turnovers and had 16 steals in the match.  Both sides shot 46% from the floor.  The Titans dominated the boards with a 42-24 advantage.  The Titans had 31 points off turnovers and 14 second chance points.    Cristina Jones led the Titans with a double-double behind 17 points and 13 rebounds.  Maddy Tauro had 15 points, Kya Pearson had 14 points, and Maxine Sutisna had 12 points.

Both sides traded the lead early to start the game.  The Titans made three treys from Kya Pearson and Madelynn Muniz to give them the lead.  The Titans led 15-10 after the first quarter.



The Titans went on a 10-3 run to start the second quarter and take a 25-13 lead. 



The Titans stretched their lead to as much as 15 points in the quarter as they held onto a 35-22 lead at halftime.



CSUN cut the lead to 9 points early to start the third quarter.  However, the Titans went on a 11-5 run to close out the third quarter on top 56-40.



The Titans outscored the Matadors 25-to-20 in the final frame.  The Titans went ahead by 20 points midway through the fourth quarter.  The Matadors brought it down to as much 15 points but the Titans were able to extend the lead to 21 points by the end of the game.



The Titans and Matadors will meet again for the third time this season in the 1st Round of the Big West Championship next Wednesday at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada.  The No. 5 Titans and No. 8 Matadors game will take place at 12:00 p.m..  The winner of that match will take on the No. 4 University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine on Thursday, March 12th at 12:00 p.m.
