FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball program ranked No. 4 in the D1Softball and Softball America Week Seven Mid-Major Top 25 Rankings, the publications announced Monday morning. The Titans reclaimed their highest ranking of the season (No. 4) and remain the only ranked Big West program in both publications.
The Titans have ranked in D1Softball's Mid-Major Top 25 Rankings each week this season, coming in at No. 11 (preseason), No. 18 (week one), No. 15 (week two), No. 8 (week three), No. 5 (week four), No. 4 (week five) and No. 5 (week six).Â
As an offense, the Titans slashed .403/.442/.571 with three players batting over .500 in their series sweep over UC San Diego.Â
Junior infielder
Sarah Perez had four hits in five at-bats, batting .800 with two runs scored and three walks. Junior outfielder
Kate Verhoef slashed an impressive .556/.556/.667 against the Tritons, recording five hits, a double, a run scored, and four RBI. Sophomore infielder
Sarah Coccillos was the third Titan to hit .500 with five hits, two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Together, the three went 3-for-4 in stolen base attempts.Â
The Titans hit three home runs against the Tritons, two of which belonged to
Lulu Sanchez in back-to-back games. Sanchez served as Fullerton's designated player in all three games after hitting her first home run of the season in the series opener on Saturday. She slashed .375/.375/1.125 and contributed a total of three RBI over the weekend.Â
In the circle,
Eva Hurtado was lights out in the series-clinching 4-0 shutout on Sunday. Hurtado pitched her first complete game of the year, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA through seven innings of work. Against the right-hander, UC San Diego batters were silenced to two hits and a .091 batting average.
Leanna Garcia earned the win in the series opener and finale. She pitched 7.2 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and seven walks. As a staff, the Titans struck out 12 batters.Â
Overall, the Titans have slashed .310/.367/.460 with 234 hits, 28 doubles, two triples, 27 home runs and 129 RBI. On the bases, they have successfully stolen 53 of their 63 stolen base attempts and scored 143 runs.Â
The Titans continue Big West play on the road at UC Davis on March 28-29. The series opens with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.Â
