Softball Secures Series Opener Win Over UC San Diego

Back-to-back home runs by Arce and Sanchez, Verhoef’s late double push Titans past Tritons

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Cal State Fullerton softball team defeated UC San Diego 8-7 in Saturday night's series opener at Anderson Family Field. The Titans improved to 17-10 overall and 6-1 in Big West play.

Alexia Lopez drove in the first Titan run of the day in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly before Sarah Coccillos plated another run on a ground ball hit to third base. Leading 2-0 after two innings, UC San Diego loaded the bases in the third and took a 3-2 lead on a walk and an infield single.

Trisha McCleskey's night in the circle came to an end in the fourth inning after giving up an RBI triple that extended UCSD's lead to 4-3. Through 3.1 innings of work, McCleskey allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Titans responded with force in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Ava Arce (1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI) and Lulu Sanchez (1-for-3, R, HR, RBI) hit back-to-back solo home runs to tie the game at 4-4. Arce led off the inning with her team-leading seventh homer of the year and 105th RBI of her career, while Sanchez hit her first home run in a Titan uniform.

The Tritons retook a 5-4 lead over the Titans in the fifth inning before an outfield assist by Kate Verhoef and two infield popups to Leanna Garcia in the circle, and Lopez behind the plate, left the bases full of Tritons.

The Titans rallied in the bottom half of the fifth to allow Nataly Lozano (2-for-4, R, RBI, SB) room to tie the game at 5-5 on a hard-hit RBI single to the pitcher. Arce followed with an RBI ground out to take a 6-5 lead over the Tritons, and Verhoef (2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) delivered a two-out, two-run double to push Fullerton to an 8-5 advantage.

Despite a two-run home run in the seventh inning by UCSD, the Titans secured the series opener victory with three consecutive outs. Garcia pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks. She improved to 3-0 on the season and contributed two strikeouts from the circle.

The series against the Titans and Tritons concludes at Anderson Family Field on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
