Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Women's Water Polo Loses Conference Opener to CSUN

FULLERTON, Calif. - One bad quarter from the Titans saw the game slip away from them as the Titans women's water polo team fell 10-6 to the visiting No. 23 CSUN Matadors at the Titans Aquatic Center on Friday night.

The Titans fell to 11-6 overall and 0-1 in Big West play for the season.

Destiny Hernandez led the Titans with two goals while Kenzie Searle, Jade Lonzo, Chandler Burrell, and Emme Doube-MacLeod all scored one goal. Renske Boxsem made six saves in the cages.  Her counterpart, Erika Staine of CSUN made 14 saves as she stymied the Titans offense all night.

CSUN jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter before the Titans clawed their way back into the game.  Jade Lonzo scored the Titans first goal before Kenzie Searle also scored to tie the game at 2-2.

The Matadors got a goal with 1:09 left on a powerplay and led 3-2 after one.

CSUN scored the only goal in the second quarter and led 4-2 at halftime.

The Titans looked to make a comeback in the third as Destiny Hernandez scored on a 5-meter penalty to start the score to make it 4-3.  The Titans thought they had tied the game at 4-4 on their next possesion but Mia Solarzano last second chip shot over the keeper was ruled out after the referees called for a shot clock violation.  The Matadors then scored three goals over the final two minutes of the quarter to take a 7-3 lead over the Titans.

The Matadors added two in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 9-3 lead over the Titans.  The Titans finally responded over the next couple minutes as Chandler Burrell, Destiny Hernandez, and Emme Doube-MacLeod scored to make it a 9-6 game.

The Titans tried switching their goalkeeper for a field player in the final 90 seconds but the Matadors scored to restore their 4-goal lead.  The Titans couldn't score the rest of the way as the Matadors held on to their 10-6 win over the Titans.

The Titans will remain at home to host UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon.  The game begins at 12:05 on Sunday.
