Titans Fall After Early Lead in Irvine

The Fullerton Titans fell 86-65 on Saturday after starting with an early lead.

Irvine, Calif. – The Fullerton Titans fought hard in a Valentine's Day showdown at UC Irvine on Saturday, but could not stay on top, resulting in an 86-65 loss on the road. The Titans had an early lead which eventually slipped away leading to a season series loss against the Anteaters.

The Titans got off to an early start, taking a 5-0 lead over the Anteaters, before UC Irvine found the basket. Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro, Davis White and Landon Seaman posted back-to-back-to-back three pointers in the first five minutes of the half. Fullerton had an eight-point lead, their highest of the game, at the 10-minute mark, but UCI caught up and started to take control.

With six minutes to go, the Anteaters knit together an 11-point run over three minutes, giving them a 33-25 lead. The Titans found the net a few more times in the final minutes of the first half, but UCI held onto their lead, going into halftime with a score of 41-32.

Fullerton shot 31% from the field and 33% from the three-point line, making seven three-point shots. Seaman led the team with nine points in the first half, all coming from three-pointers. CSF had good ball control, forcing UCI to nine first half turnovers while only tallying four themselves.

In the second half, the two went back and forth, but every time the Titans scored, so did the Anteaters. UCI's offense felt unstoppable, leading to an 86-65 Anteater win in Irvine. Fullerton shot the ball better in the second half, tallying a 43% field goal percentage, but the Anteaters posted a 54% shooting percentage. Freshman, KJ Garris led the team with eight points in the second half.

Seaman led the team with 14 points and two blocks against the Anteaters. Cofield also tallied double figures and led with six rebounds. Christian Williams posted five assists and three steals on Saturday.

The Titans are back in action on Thursday, Feb. 19 at home when they host UC Davis at 7 p.m.
