Fullerton Falls to Utah Valley on Late Goal

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton fell in heartbreaking fashion to Utah Valley Wednesday night at Titan Stadium, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Wolverines. With the loss, the Titans fall to 4-5-3 overall and 0-2 in Big West play.

Fullerton battled back to level the match at 1-1 in the 80th minute, but Utah Valley regained the lead just five minutes later. A long-range shot in the 85th minute slipped through the Titan goalkeeper's hands and into the net, giving the Wolverines a 2-1 advantage that proved to be the deciding goal.

After conceding the opening goal in the 24th minute and playing on their heels for much of the first half, Fullerton flipped the script in the second 45 minutes. The Titans dominated the second half of play, recording 12 shots with several of them being strong scoring chances.

The Titans pressed on defense and kept the attack, leading to a corner kick in the 80th minute. Following a saved header from Aidan Brothers, Aiden Bengard tracked the rebound and finished with a header to tie the game at 1-1.

Chaos ensued following the goal. Utah Valley argued that the corner kick that led to the goal should not have been awarded and that the Wolverines should have instead been awarded a goal kick. The referee initially overturned the goal following a review, but ultimately reinstated the goal after determining that the play was not reviewable.

The lengthy review process appeared to slow down a lot of the momentum the Titans had gained from the game-tying before ultimately leading to the go-ahead for Utah Valley.

Fullerton looks to rebound Saturday night as the team heads back out on the road to face CSUN in a Big West matchup at 7:00 p.m.
