IRVINE, Calif. – Cal State Fullerton men's soccer dropped its Big West opener at UC Irvine by a final score of 3-1 Saturday night. With the loss the Titans snap their four-game winning streak and fall to 4-4-3 on the year and 0-1 in Big West play.Â
Fullerton had a strong start to the game, scoring in the 10th minute of action to take an early 1-0 lead. Alex Lugo dribbled through the defense before finishing to the far post for his first goal of the season.Â
The game turned hectic in the 26th minute as the head referee issued red cards to both teams. After review, UC Irvine was issued a red card while Fullerton's card was changed to a yellow.Â
In the 40th minute, Lachlan Quate who had been issued the yellow card in the 26th minute, received his second yellow of the game for time wasting which resulted in a red card to leave both sides with 10 players on the field. Quate was on the sideline for a throw-in and was issued a card just seconds after receiving the ball for the throw-in.
Just minutes into the second half, UC Irvine was awarded a penalty kick which they converted to tie the game at 1-1 in the 48th minute.Â
The two sides continued to battle back and forth with 10 players each before Fullerton was shown another red card in the 80th minute, forcing the Titans to play the remainder of the match with just nine players.
UC Irvine took advantage of the Titans playing down a man, taking a 2-1 lead in the 82nd minute before putting the game away with a third goal in the 90th minute.Â
After four straight road games, Fullerton returns to Titan Stadium for its Big West home opener against Utah Valley Wednesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
