LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Cal State Fullerton Titans women's water polo split their day in Day Two of the Triton Invitational after falling to No. 18 Michigan in their first game of the morning before coming back and defeating No. 19 UC Santa Barbara in their second game of the day in the afternoon.
The win over the No. 19 Gauchos was just the team's third Top 25 ranked win in program history and their highest ranked win.  They previously defeated No. 24 Biola (2/14/2024) and No. 25 CSUN (4/7/2024).
Cal State Fullerton 8, No. 18 Michigan 18
The Titans lost their first game of the day in the morning against the No. 18 Michigan Wolverines.
The Titans kept the game close in the first half, trailing only 9-6 before the Wolverines outscored the Titans 9-to-2 over the final two quarters to pull away.
The Titans and Wolverines traded goals early in the first quarter as Michigan led 5-to-3 after one. Â
Hannah Reekstin scored twice and
Kenzie Searle scored.
In the second quarter, Michigan outscored the Titans 4-to-3. Â
Emme Doube-MacLeod,
Kenzie Searle, and
Lotte Boxsem scored.
However in the third quarter, Michigan went on a 4-0 scoring run before
Sofia Moschetti scored the final goal of the period.
Delaney Latham scored once for the Titans in the final frame as the Wolverines scored five goals for the period.
The Titans will play Michigan again next month at home during the Convergence Tournament.
Cal State Fullerton 11, No. 19 UC Santa Barbara 9
In the Titans second game of the day, they pulled out one of their biggest wins in program history.
It was a close battle early in the game as both sides scored two goals in the first quarter.
Mia Solorzano and
Hannah Reekstin scored for the Titans in the first to keep it a 2-2 game. Â
In the second quarter, UCSB scored first to take a 3-2 lead before the Titans went on a 3-0 scoring run. Â
Kenzie Searle,
Sofia Moschetti, and
Mia Hatch scored to give the Titans a 5-3 lead. Â The Gauchos got one goal back before halftime to make it a 5-4 game after two.
The Titans outscored UCSB 4-3 in the third quarter. Â
Sofia Moschetti scored first before the Gauchos equalized to keep one goal lead. Â
Kenzie Searle scored to give the Titans a 7-5 lead before the Gauchos got two goals to tie the game at 7-7. Â
Hannah Reekstin scored and
Lotte Boxsem scored on a 5-meter penalty to give the Titans a 9-7 lead after three quarters.
Emme Doube-MacLeod and
Sofia Moschetti scored to start the fourth quarter to give the Titans an 11-7 lead. Â The Titans defense allowed two goals over the final three minutes as they held onto the win over the Gauchos.
The Titans will take on Claremont-Mudd Scripps on Sunday morning at 10:20 a.m. in the 13th place game.The Titans previously beat CMS in their second game of the season in a tight knit 13-12 victory.
